The Kosciuszko Fast Facts

  • Last mare to win The Kosciuszko: Clear Thinking (2025)
  • Last multiple The Kosciuszko: Front Page (2022 & 2023)
  • Last favourite to win The Kosciuszko: Clear Thinking ($3.70 in 2025)
  • Notable Fact: Not only did Front Page become the first horse dual The Kosciuszko winner he led all-the-way both times!

The Kosciuszko betting takes place on the popular The Kosciuszko race which is held at Royal Randwick Racecourse on a Saturday in mid to late October annually as part of the huge The Everest Day card.

The Kosciuszko odds are offered on the special conditions event during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, and the field attracts a host of quality country-trained horses from NSW and the ACT with may racing on a massive metropolitan race day for the first time.

The Kosciuszko Australia’s most popular horse race for country trained horses and has been run and won since 2018 when Belflyer became the inaugural champion.

The Kosciuszko history shows the event was introduced by Racing NSW after the enormous success of The Everest slot race, which is now a Group 1 race offering $20 million in prizemoney making it the world’s richest turf race!

The Kosciuszko is a scaled-down version of The Everest, specifically for horses trained in country New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. Horses must be legitimately under the care of a NSW country trainer to be eligible for a spot in the field.

It is a unique race run over 1200m with an attractive $2,000,000 prize purse. Unlike most races, its 14 runners are determined by a sweepstakes-style draw.

New South Wales residents can buy $5 tickets, and in mid-September, 14 tickets are randomly drawn. The lucky ticket holders then have the chance to negotiate with the owners of eligible country-trained horses to secure a runner for the race and agree on a prize money split.

In 2025, horses that are the winner of a Group 1 race, The Everest or The Golden Eagle run after midnight on 31 December 2023 are ineligible.

A Brief History of The Kosciuszko

The inaugural running of The Kosciuszko in 2018 featured horses from all over New South Wales, including some elite stakes runners. The race was a wet affair, taking place on a heavy track after a day of intermittent rain.

In 2019, a Canberra-trained runner took home the prize, with the past two Country Championships winners and the most recent Provincial Championships winner finishing just behind in second, third, and fourth place. The 2020 edition saw a dramatic victory for It’s Me, who overcame pre-race issues and a late veterinary clearance to win.

The race has since seen several memorable moments:

  • Art Cadeau made history by becoming the first horse to complete the Country Championships and Kosciuszko double.
  • Front Page became the first two-time winner, leading from start to finish on both occasions.
  • In 2024, Far Too Easy finally claimed victory after finishing behind Front Page twice, getting his redemption in a strong field that also included notable runners like Tanglewood, Boom Torque, and Bandi’s Boy.
  • Clear Thinking became the second mare to win when saluting as the first-up favourite.

Expert Tips on the 2025 The Kosciuszko

Stay tuned for our expert tips and The Kosciuszko betting predictions ahead of this year’s race at Randwick.

To Win: No. 12 Without Parallel ($7 at time of publish) – BET NOW

There’s been some early market support for WITHOUT PARALLEL (2) to take out The Kosciuszko, and I’m happy to follow the money trail. I liked her when she was at longer odds, but that market move gives me extra confidence heading into Saturday’s feature. The Matthew Dunn-trained Time Test mare will be ridden by Craig Williams from a perfect barrier two draw, and the talented four-year-old boasts a faultless two-from-two record over 1200m — the same trip she faces again this weekend. She was electric two starts back at Rosehill, putting nearly five lengths on her rivals on a Heavy (10) track, showing exactly how devastating she can be when conditions suit. Last time out, she finished fifth at the same venue over 1100m, fading late after working early, but that can easily be forgiven. She now returns to her preferred distance, drops back to 53.5kg, and has been kept fresh with a 50-day break — a pattern she thrives on. With her record, a gun jockey booked, and an ideal setup, this could be the run that takes Without Parallel from quiet country achiever to feature-race star. Fresh, fit, and back to her favourite trip — Without Parallel looks perfectly placed to make the climb to the top of the mountain.

The Kosciuszko Tips

The Kosciuszko tips on which horse will win the next edition of the event flood in as the countdown to the important Randwick race heats up.

The Kosciuszko tips on what horse will win The Kosciuszko this year are highly sought after by smart punters and racing fans every season.

When looking at The Kosciuszko race tips it is important to consider factors including:

  • What horses in The Kosciuszko field are proven over the distance?
  • Who the key The Kosciuszko trainers and jockeys are and what horses they have in The Kosciuszko field this year?
  • The Kosciuszko barrier statistics and where your The Kosciuszko betting selections are drawn.
  • The Kosciuszko horses that are racing first-up and have a good record fresh.

How long does it take to know if you placed a winning The Kosciuszko race tip? The event itself takes around 1 minute and 10 seconds for competing horses to run the 1,200m trip depending on track conditions.

The official The Kosciuszko winner and winning The Kosciuszko trifecta are known shortly after unless there is a protest or a photo-finish The Kosciuszko result.

What are the best The Kosciuszko lead-up races to look at when placing a The Kosciuszko bet?

When placing a bet on The Kosciuszko, several key lead-up races have proven to be strong indicators of form and suitability for the 1200m sprint at Randwick.

Here’s a comprehensive list of the best lead-up races to consider:

  • Ramornie Handicap (1200m) at Grafton in July: A Listed sprint that attracts many Kosciuszko contenders. Horses like Far Too Easy and Front Page have used it as a springboard to Kosciuszko success. Look for horses that finish strongly or handle pressure in large fields.
  • Country Championships Final (1400m) at Randwick in the Autumn: Although contested over a slightly longer distance, it showcases the best NSW country-trained horses. Art Cadeau won both the Country Championships and The Kosciuszko.
  • Tamworth Cup (1400m) at Tamworth in April: A strong regional race that tests stamina and class. Horses that perform well here often transition successfully to shorter Kosciuszko distances.
  • Highway Handicap Series (1000m to 1400m) in Sydney weekly: Restricted to country-trained horses, these races offer a direct comparison to Kosciuszko conditions.

Australian-Bred Horses in The Kosciuszko

Betting on the Australian-bred horses in the field is key as The Kosciuszko tips favour the proven local hopes who won every edition of the race until the 2025 success of the British bred mare Clear Thinking (GB) in 2025.

The Kosciuszko Tips for a Trifecta

The Kosciuszko tips for a trifecta cover the first three horses to officially go past the finishing post in The Kosciuszko results.

The horse to finish on top of The Kosciuszko trifecta is your The Kosciuszko winner, the runner who outsprinted all their rivals and finished in the fastest time.

Placing a The Kosciuszko trifecta exotic bet on the race is a great way to add to the thrill and potentially be rewarded with a generous pay-out.

A The Kosciuszko trifecta is only successful if the three horses in your bet finish in the exact order you predict. Punters may choose instead to box their trifecta bets on The Kosciuszko to cover more finishing options and increase the chances of winning.

Adding the favourite into your The Kosciuszko trifecta bet is a top tip as the favourites have an excellent recent strike-rate running top three in the event.

What makes betting on The Kosciuszko so popular?

The fact that The Kosciuszko is the richest race for country trained horses in Australasia, is run during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival and one of the key October horse races make it a must watch and must bet on racing event.

Betting on The Kosciuszko is special because of its unique, community-driven format that creates a genuine “battlers versus the big guns” atmosphere.

Unlike a typical Group 1 race, the field for The Kosciuszko is selected through a lottery. Members of the public buy $5 tickets, and the lucky winners earn a “slot” in the race. Each slot holder then negotiates with the owners and trainers of eligible country-trained horses from NSW and the ACT to secure their horse for the race.

This grassroots system makes it special for a few reasons:

  • Unpredictable Field: The horses aren’t chosen by their Group 1 form or a high ranking, but by the lottery winners. This can lead to some incredible underdog stories and a truly unpredictable field.
  • Community Connection: The race fosters a strong sense of community, as towns and small syndicates rally behind their local horse. For punters, this adds an emotional layer to their betting, as they can back a horse with a compelling story.
  • Value Betting: Because the field is filled with talented but often less-exposed country-trained horses, it can be a goldmine for astute punters. Long-odds winners are common, and the form can be difficult to assess, making it a great race for finding value.

The Kosciuszko is a hugely popular and lucrative race that forms part of the spring’s richest race day – The Everest Day.

With a substantial prize pool of $2,000,000, The Kosciuszko offers lucrative returns for connections and generates considerable betting turnover.

The race’s competitive nature and the presence of high-profile horses provide numerous betting opportunities, from win/place bets to exotic bets like trifectas and quinellas.

What are the popular betting markets for The Kosciuszko?

When it comes to betting on The Kosciuszko, there are a number of more popular betting options with punters including:

Exotics: These include Quinella, Trifecta, and First Four, where you predict the specific order of finishers, offering potentially higher payouts but requiring more precise predictions.

Win & Place: Bet on a horse to win or finish in the top places. This is one of the most straightforward and popular betting options.

Each-Way: A combination of win and place bets, providing a safety net if your chosen horse doesn’t win but finishes in the top positions.

How many mares have won The Kosciuszko?
