Argentina’s clash with Cape Verde was supposed to be a training run and when Messi put them in front after 29 minutes it would appear to be the case. Cape Verde had other ideas as they equalised, were able to force extra time and even after falling behind again, managed to equalise. The relentless pressure took its toll with an own goal handing Argentina a 3-2 win. The defending champion progressed but there were some chinks in their armour which we hadn’t seen. Nevertheless, they are undefeated in their last 11 games and have averaged 2.9 goals per game in and 8 clean sheets in that stretch.

Egypt have progress to the Round of 16 with a single regulation time win in four games played. They have however managed to score at least once in each of their last 5 games but have not kept a clean sheet since a friendly game against Russia back in May. Conceded against the likes of Australia, Iran and New Zealand in their last three games does not bode well for a battle against a team headlined by Lionel Messi.

Admittedly, Egypt does have more ability going forward with Salah, Marmoush and Ashour but the key against the South American nations is containing their attack. They have failed to score only once from 2024 onwards but are virtually unbeatable when they score 2+ goals. You do not want to trade goals with them but Egypt may be forced to if they fall behind early. Cape Verde testing them could be the wake up call they needed. Argentina by multiple goals.
