Matt Markham gives his best in all races at Alexandra Park Harness on Wednesday, December 31.
Some really nice work of late from Upstage (11) and in decent fields too. Strikes another one here but perhaps not quite as strong as some of the recent races. Second line draw doesn’t concern too much will be out and rolling when it’s important and right in the fight.
Selections: 11-8-7-2-4
11. Upstage (11) J: Tim Williams x1215T: Steve & Amanda Telfer
Might pay to just put a line through the Cambridge effort of Joe Kennedy (8). His run here first up in the north two starts back however looks good enough to win this wide open maiden field. Needs the right kind of trip to unfold but can have the final say here.
Selections: 8-7-5-2-9
8. Joe Kennedy (0) J: Zachary Butcher 08×50T: Derek & Neita Balle
Two really handy runs in the last two appearances from Billy The Kid (3) and a win looks just around the corner. Not a deep field here again and from the good draw looks likely to roll forward and try to lead them all the way again. Might be his night tonight.
Selections: 3-9-6-8-4
3. Billy The Kid (3) J: Sailesh Abernethy 67633T: Jeremy Young
Probably not much doubt that Hillbilly (3) is the best horse in this race and if the manners are there and everything falls into place then really should be winning. Should be able to lead up if they choose too, or come from back in the field. It really shouldn’t matter.
Selections: 3-1-6-4-7
3. Hillbilly (3) J: Emily Johnson 3×226T: Sean McCaffrey
The breeding is on the board and so to now is a maiden success for Crippa Max (6) who was great on Xmas Eve at Cambridge. Looks a pretty smart type in the making and while stepping up in grade here should be ready for the challenge and hard to beat again.
Selections: 6-7-5-4-2
6. Crippa Max (6) J: Andre Poutama 1T: Mark & Nathan Purdon
Back to his old tricks again last time, Look To Da Stars (9) will be out for redemption tonight. Best horse in the race when he’s doing everything right and being genuine, but a few little issues at times in his gait. If he finds his rhythm they will be running for second.
Selections: 9-5-6-8-1
9. Look To Da Stars (4) J: Mark Purdon 45118T: Mark & Nathan Purdon
The best of the chasing bunch behind Sooner The Bettor here on Golden Gait night, Mhai Surfer Girl (6) continued her great run of form. Doesn’t win them out of turn, but she’s never usually far away from the action either and if she gets the right trip tonight, she can win.
Selections: 6-5-8-2-1
6. Mhai Surfer Girl (6) J: Matthew White 35532T: Matthew White
A nice set up here tonight for Mighty Logan (2) to be able to trot his way onto the speed and make a serious claim for Gr.1 glory. Really good here a couple of weeks ago and if he was to find the front early and control things then he’d take a power of beating with his own terms.
Selections: 2-8-1-4-9
2. Mighty Logan (2) J: John Dunn 76412T: Robert & Jenna Dunn
Dropping out of a Gr.1 mares race last start, Arden’s Memory (6) was far from disgraced there. This looks a whole lot easier though and if she can find herself in the right spot at the right time then her class will see her win this race nine times out of 10.
Selections: 6-7-10-4-9
6. Arden’s Memory (6) J: Brooke Wilkins 15116T: Mark & Nathan Purdon
Not a horse in NZ at the moment going as well as Republican Party (2). He was clinical winning the Invercargill Cup and is on track to repeat his effort of 12 months ago when he did the double by winning this race. Good draw for a strong stand start exponent and he should be hard to stop.
Selections: 2-5-6-7-8
2. Republican Party (2) J: Carter Dalgety 16211T: Cran & Chrissie Dalgety
Probably just OK last time out in a race she looked a strong chance in, but the reliability of Walkinonsunshine (7) makes her the best bet in this race. Does things right and is quick away from the tapes so shouldn’t be too far off them. Looks the one to beat.
Selections: 7-8-6-2-3
7. Walkinonsunshine (4) J: John Dunn 44244T: Tom Bagrie
He just does enough to keep you interested Double Parked (1). Big win two starts back and then OK last time when third. Ace draw might not be ideal for him tonight unless he can hold up early and pick and choose his battles from there. Good enough to win but needs it his way to happen.
Selections: 1-4-8-5-2
1. Double Parked (1) J: Tony Herlihy 19313T: Tony Herlihy
