Ipswich Tips & Preview | Wednesday 3 September

Seven races are set to unfold at Ipswich this Wednesday, September 3rd.

With clear skies over Queensland, the track is rated a Good 4 and the rail remains positioned eight metres out.

Our top selection lines up in Race 6, where a promising David VanDyke-trained mare looks to make it two wins in a row. We’ve also uncovered some solid each-way chances earlier in the card.

For a full rundown of our top picks throughout the day, dive into our race-by-race Ipswich Preview below.

Race 1 – Class 1 Plate (2200 METRES)
No. 8 Hurricane Rosie
Each Way

HURRICANE ROSIE (8) returns to Ipswich, where she recorded her sole career win from 15 starts.

The four-year-old daughter of Toronado hasn’t found winning easy, but her recent form has been impressively consistent—finishing no worse than fifth in her last five outings.

She comes off a solid second at Grafton last week on a testing surface, beaten 2.7 lengths after showing early speed.

Now deep into her preparation and race-fit, she looks ready to step up again. With the quick turnaround and a preference for more ground, she shapes as a genuine contender in this field.

Race 2 – GREAT NORTHERN Fillies and Mares Maiden Plate (1100 METRES)
No. 4 Immediate

IMMEDIATE (4), trained by Tony Gollan, looks poised to shed her maiden status sooner rather than later.

The daughter of Better Than Ready resumed at Eagle Farm with a near miss for a placing, then backed it up with a strong mid-race move last start over the same course and distance, holding on gamely for third.

Now third-up and at peak fitness, she’s ready to strike. With Ben Thompson likely to position her up on the speed again, she’ll take plenty of catching.

Race 3 – RED BULL Colts, Geldings and Entires Maiden Plate (1100 METRES)
No. 4 Watertight

WATERTIGHT (4) is one to keep a close eye on as she resumes for Matthew Hoysted.

We got an early glimpse of her potential on debut at the Sunshine Coast last year, where she finished just half a length behind Bold Arctic—who has since held her own in subsequent outings.

Her recent trial win at Doomben was encouraging, showing determination to surge late and get up right on the line.

Well drawn and likely to relish the firmer surface, she’s expected to give a strong account of herself first-up.

Race 4 – BARRIER REEF POOLS BENCHMARK 75 Handicap (800 METRES)
No. 4 Maguro

MAGURO (4) gets the nod in what shapes as a wide-open contest.

While his last run at Eagle Farm was below expectations—beaten nearly five lengths—it came after a month between starts, so some leniency is warranted.

His prior performance over this track and trip was far more encouraging, showing good early speed to lead for most of the race before being run down late.

Dropping back in distance and returning to a firmer surface could be the key. With a tighter turnaround between runs, he looks primed to bounce back and deliver a stronger showing.

Race 5 – SCHWEPPES Class 2 Plate (1100 METRES)
No. 4 Pareto

PARETO (4) steps out second-up for David McColm, fitter now after narrowly missing a placing when resuming at Eagle Farm last month.

He wrapped up his autumn campaign with a strong runner-up finish at Randwick, and while his first-up effort was hampered by a wide run and testing conditions, he still managed to finish within four lengths.

Given nearly four weeks to freshen up, he returns over a slightly longer trip and gets the benefit of Ryan Maloney in the saddle. With fitness on his side and a more favourable setup, he’s expected to show marked improvement.

Race 6 – SEVEN BENCHMARK 65 Handicap (1700 METRES)
No. 10 Cherish The Day
Tip of The Day

CHERISH THE DAY (10) shapes as one of the stronger plays on the program.

He showed real grit to score over a similar trip here two weeks back, settling off the pace before launching wide and finishing powerfully. Though he made contact with another runner late, the protest was upheld, confirming the merit of his effort.

Drawn to get a softer run from the inside alley and with the track improving, he’s well placed to go back-to-back. Conditions suit, and there’s every reason to expect another bold showing.

Race 7 – RAY WHITE IPSWICH BENCHMARK 68 Handicap (1200 METRES)
No. 10 Zoufani

ZOUFANI (10) returns third-up for Tony Gollan and still looks to have plenty of upside.

This lightly-raced mare has shown admirable consistency in her short career, resuming with a strong second at Eagle Farm before leading throughout to score over 1300m last start.

She arguably could’ve won by a bigger margin if not for early interference, and the drop back to 1200m here at Ipswich—where she broke her maiden by 2.6 lengths—looks ideal.

With conditions to suit and fitness peaking, she’s well placed to continue her winning form.
