Matt Markham gives his best in all races at Methven Harness on Sunday 30 November, 2025.
Spotted sneaking up the markers after getting trapped away on the fence last week at The Mot, Chance On Me (8) should find clear air a little earlier this week. Different set up, but she’s a good grass track operator and with the right kind of run can win.
Selections: 8-11-6-2-1
8. Chance On Me (8) J: Leo O’Reilly 03×65T: Leo O’Reilly
Eye-catching final burst fresh up from a long spell last week by Real Velocity (6) and natural improvement you would expect to carry a long way here. Field is probably a little weaker than last week too so certainly ticks all the right boxes.
Selections: 6-2-8-4-7
6. Real Velocity (6) J: Blair Orange 5x0x3T: James McDonald
A bit to like in all three of the race day appearances to this point from Antisocial (11). Given a wee freshen up after getting left parked at Timaru and steps out here fresh and ready to go. Has high speed so look for a strong finishing burst.
Selections: 11-6-5-2-4
11. Antisocial (11) J: Jessica Young-Grant 247T: Jessica Young-Grant
Lovely effort last week from Son E (5) in a field similar to this. No surprise to see some inspired support come off the back of that run. Should trot onto the speed early here and look to hold a forward spot throughout and with continued improvement, can win.
Selections: 5-17-19-18-13
5. Son E (5) J: Sam Thornley 00×02T: Sam Thornley
Two really strong efforts in the past two starts have Hey Tonight (8) knocking on the door of another victory. Loves the grass track venues and grabs a leading junior driver for the assignment in a wide open field which is another good tick.
Selections: 8-4-3-6-2
8. Hey Tonight (8) J: Carter Dalgety 00022T: Barry Ward
A bit to like about the recent efforts of Penny Weight (13) and she might be the blowout chance here from the second row. Racing full of confidence and with a nice drag into it at the right time can finish over the top of them.
Selections: 13-6-1-9-10
13. Penny Weight (13) J: Craig Thornley 56303T: Ben Waldron
Off the back of a strong run on Show Day where he finished third behind Captain Kobe, The Coalman (2) gets back onto the grass today and lends in a really nice race for him. His good manners will have him on the speed early and from there he’s a big winning chance.
Selections: 2-12-4-6-1
2. The Coalman (2) J: Seth Hill 40372T: Mark Jones
Progressive trotter Royal Rock (9) lost no admirers with his bold fourth on Cup Day behind Judy J. He’s back onto the green tops here which he’s shown a liking for with two wins on the grass already in the career. Might take bad luck out of the equation and not look back.
Selections: 9-7-18-15-4
9. Royal Rock (1) J: John Morrison 38134T: John Morrison
A shift out to the beach for a bit of a refresh might be the key for Pinseeker (8) bouncing back to form. Disappointed in the NZ Trotting Cup but if he was to run up to his fourth in the Ashburton Flying Stakes here, he’d win for fun. And he might just do that.
Selections: 8-9-5-7-6
8. Pinseeker (8) J: Jonny Cox p2040T: Jonny Cox
After joining in for fun half way down The Mot straight last week and running away with victory it’s hard to make a case for Hi Hopes (15) not doing the same again. Such an effortless win and stays in a similar grade so hard to beat once again.
Selections: 15-9-4-17-18
15. Hi Hopes (8) J: John Dunn 05961T: Tom Bagrie
Two great runs during Cup Week from Muscle Mountain (9) and he steps out in a race he finished second in last year behind Oscar Bonavena. Cops a wide draw which doesn’t help but if he’s close enough turning for home, they’ll know he’s there.
Selections: 9-8-12-10-6
9. Muscle Mountain (9) J: Ben Hope 31182T: Greg & Ben Hope
Not bad last week at Addington in a very good field, Troubleshooter (12) gets back onto the home track here and looks a strong chance off the second row draw. Big win at Ashburton two back and anything close to that in this field will net the same result.
Selections: 12-6-5-4-11
12. Troubleshooter (12) J: Gerard O’Reilly 23718T: Michael Heenan
