Matt Markham has been through the form guide and speed maps and has provided his race analysis and betting strategy for each of the 11 races at the Addington Harness meeting on Friday 21 August below:
A tough run at Ashburton last time out for Bettor Than Lizzy (11) in a genuinely run race. The better line for her is the prior runs here at Addington where she had been in strong form. A chance to sit off the speed here and come with the final say and can certainly win.
Selections: 11-2-1-12-9
11. Bettor Than Lizzy (2) J: Jonny Cox 62550 T: Cran & Chrissie Dalgety
Good enough to finish third in the NZ Trotting Derby last start, Request (3) looks in for a good campaign here. Has stepped out nicely with two very good trial wins to prepare and as long as the manners are there tonight then she should be a little bit too good for this field.
Selections: 3-10-13-9-6
3. Request (3) J: Blair Orange 1x43x T: Ken Barron
An early error put an end to any hopes of a win on debut for Sidestepper (4) but there was merit in the run afterwards and it certainly suggests a win won’t take long. Finds a good race tonight with a nice draw to use and if able to get everything right and perhaps lead then might be too good.
Selections: 4-6-3-7-9
4. Sidestepper (4) J: John Dunn 6 T: Robert & Jenna Dunn
He’s got plenty of ability, but Major Cyclone (4) can also through in the odd head-scratcher from time-to-time. Comes in here off the back of a freshen up but had been very good before the spell and if able to recapture that form quickly then will be hard to beat tonight.
Selections: 4-2-6-8-7
4. Major Cyclone (4) J: Bob Butt 74141 T: Hayden & Amanda Cullen
A full-brother to Captains Mistress and a half-brother to Merlin, Faith Not Fear (5) lacks nothing for breeding but importantly it looks like he’s inherited plenty of the family ability on the track as well. Some really sharp trial efforts and a lot of word around him being one a little bit better than good. Tonight we find out if that’s true.
Selections: 5-4-3-1-7
5. Faith Not Fear (5) J: Samantha Ottley T: Hayden & Amanda Cullen
A busy early part to the year for Queen Lizzy (5) but boy she ran some big races on her trip up north. Given a spell and has looked pretty good winning two trials to prepare for this. Expecting a strong run first up and for her to assert herself as one of the better fillies in the age group over the coming months.
Selections: 5-7-6-3-4
5. Queen Lizzy (5) J: Samantha Ottley 5246x T: Mark Jones
With a few of the big guns just kicking off their campaigns, He Aint Fakin (3) gets a chance to grab a victory here. Loves a mobile and if able to find the front and run nice even quarters then should be a little too slick for the legs that aren’t quite race-hardened yet.
Selections: 3-7-6-5-4
3. He Aint Fakin (3) J: Brad Williamson 1817p T: Phil Williamson
One of the best in the land before he went for a spell, The Lazarus Effect (7) returns tonight on the pathway to perhaps laying claim to being out best open class pacer. Nice trial last week to prepare and the small field, with his speed, makes him a very hard prospect to beat tonight.
Selections: 7-3-5-6-4
7. The Lazarus Effect (7) J: Bob Butt 1122x T: Bob Butt
The find of the past month at Addington, Franco Lomu (11) has been excellent. A great win in the heat of this series, but then backed it up by beating the older horses last week and doing it without leaving second gear. Speed to burn and a bit of luck in the running and he’ll be the horse to beat tonight.
Selections: 11-10-7-2-3
11. Franco Lomu (2) J: Jonny Cox 81311 T: Regan Todd
Couldn’t have asked for much more fresh up from the spell by Eun Sogno (6) last time out. Did it tough but only just went down to a horse with a cold shot at them late. Better for it and while this ia good field, he’ll get on the speed again and look to keep them honest.
Selections: 6-7-5-9-11
6. Eun Sogno (6) J: Kimberly Butt 630×2 T: Cran & Chrissie Dalgety
She’s raced herself into some great form and Kowhai Star (1) looks primed to grab another win here tonight too. Brilliant follower of speed, she might end up with the perfect trip here and if she is close enough turning for home then she’ll be hard to beat.
Selections: 1-3-7-11-4
1. Kowhai Star (1) J: Samantha Ottley 06021 T: Mark Jones
