Matt Markham gives his best in all races at Winton Harness on Sunday 24 May.
Form has tapered off a little in the past three or four starts, but today poses a considerable drop back in grade for the talented Babe On The Beach (2). Lands a great draw to work from and an even field to take on. Should be prominent throughout and hard to beat.
Selections: 2-9-6-3-1

A string of minor placings in the last handful of starts tells the story of Rakaturbo (3). Is doing everything but win at the moment, but finds a really nice race today in which to make something happen. Confident drive will land on the speed and give a great shot.
Selections: 3-4-6-7-1
3. Rakaturbo (3) J: Carter Dalgety 34223T: Clark Barron
It’s been a busy and well travelled last month or so for Kairo (8) who returns home from a North Island campaign. Took on some of the best of the age group there and was far from disgraced. Huge difference in challenge here and if able to bring the manners is the one to beat.
Selections: 8-10-11-9-5
8. Kairo (8) J: Kirstin Green 24064T: Kirstin Green
Some luckless runs in the last few for Americana Elite (1) but the last 200m of each of them has been very impressive. Unlucky not to win last week after getting back on the markers. Can’t afford that to happen here from the ace, but if close enough should breeze on by.
Selections: 1-12-5-8-13
1. Americana Elite (1) J: Craig Ferguson 70922T: David Gregory
A really dour pacer who doesn’t throw the towel in, there’s been more good than bad of late from Rakamick (3). Handy draw and a small field here so if Carter gets him up onto the speed then he should be able to control things to suit and grab another win.
Selections: 3-6-11-2-5
3. Rakamick (3) J: Carter Dalgety 69816T: Clark Barron
The very smart Tarragindi (9) resumes here from a spell after spending all of the spring and into the summer chasing the best three-year-olds from both NZ and Australia. Brilliant when he’s on his game and even off the back mark here will have too much class if he brings the manners.
Selections: 9-7-6-5-1
9. Tarragindi (9) J: Oliver Kite 3571xT: Phil Williamson
Only ever going to better for the first up run last week, Palladium (4) arrives today with fitness on the up and a much better marble to work from which makes him the horse they all need to beat. Might take bad luck of out of the equation and if so, then looks the best of the day.
Selections: 4-7-3-8-6
4. Palladium (4) J: Nathan Williamson 2×852T: Nathan Williamson
One of the more exciting products in Southland at the moment, Imperious Girl (6) has a serious motor. Her win here last time after an early gallop was massive and she ran really quick time doing it as well, almost pacer-like speed. Manners the key again, but looks a great chance.
Selections: 6-4-7-2-10
6. Imperious Girl (6) J: Craig Ferguson 11T: Craig Ferguson
Relegated from first in her last start down here in Southland, Caught The Eye (14) then trekked back up to Canterbury and took on a smart field. This is much more within the wheel house and if she can get into the race at the right time, her class will have to take her close.
Selections: 14-13-11-4-5
14. Caught The Eye (6) J: Anthony Butt x3028T: Steve & Amanda Telfer
Has done nothing wrong this campaign and often done it in better fields than this so Mama’s Crunch (6) looks a huge chance of getting another win on the board. Likely to look to roll forward from the draw and up on the speed should be even harder to hold out.
Selections: 6-4-3-2-1
6. Mamas Crunch (6) J: Anthony Butt x7214T: Steve & Amanda Telfer
