Waverley hosts an eight-race card on Sunday, with the track rated a Soft7 and the rail out 3m from the 1600m to the 320m, remainder true. The forecast is clear for Waverley on Sunday, therefore the track should continue to improve as the day progresses.
Mitch Davis has been through the form guide and speed maps and has provided his race analysis and betting strategy for each of the eight races at the Waverley meeting on Sunday 18 October below:
Evensong (#6) is a 3yo Savabeel filly coming here at just her second career start. She was a touch one-paced when the sprint went on turning for home last start at Hastings in MAAT company, but stuck on well down the straight for 5th. She looks suited dropping back to a standard maiden, and she maps to settle handy to the speed from a nice low gate. Should measure up well in this.

Dashing (#16) is a dual acceptor here and Otaki Saturday, and looks a strong chance if connections opt for this race. He resumes here, last seen finishing 4th in Maiden company at Wanganui back in January. He’s had the benefit of a recent trial at Foxton, where he was finding the line nicely under a light ride. Can hold a handy position from the low gate and run a competitive race in what is an even maiden field.

Playbill (#8) is a 3yo Almanzor gelding on debut for Cody Cole. He’s had four trials to ready him for this, the latest of which was a sharp effort for 2nd at Avondale, where he kept up a strong gallop to the line . Sam Collett takes the reins, and from the inside gate he maps to settle handy to the speed. Expecting a bold debut showing.
8. Playbill (1) J: Samantha Collett 56kg T: Cody Cole
Inchigeelagh Lass (#3) is a 5yo mare resuming here for J J Rayner, last seen finishing 3rd at Wanganui back in April. She’s had the one trial to ready her for this, where she was given a quiet spin-around behind some smart types. Craig Grylls takes the reins, and she maps to settle midfield with cover in an evenly run race. Expecting she can run well in a fresh state.
3. Inchigeelagh Lass (5) J: Craig Grylls 58kg 2533x T: J J Rayner
One Bold Floozie (#1) comes here off a 5th here last start, where she weakened out late after copping some pressure mid-race. She maps to settle up on speed again from the inside gate under Craig Grylls, in a race that looks to have a genuine tempo engaged. Grylls should have options to lead or trail, pressure dependent. Moderate maiden field, looks a leading chance.

Trav (#4) heads here second-up off a 3rd in the Egmont Cup at Hawera, where he closed off nicely from the back of the field. He should have taken plenty of improvement out of that resuming run. He maps to settle back in the field from his low draw in a race that looks to have a genuine tempo engaged, which should see him given every chance to run well again here. Shouldn’t be far away at the finish.
4. Trav (2) J: Sarah Macnab 54.5kg 550×3 T: Raymond Connors
Meloni (#3) comes here off a win at Hawera last start, where he trailed the leaders and proved too strong late. Craig Grylls takes the reins, and he maps to settle handy to the speed from a middle barrier. He now rises in grade off the back of that last start win, which doesn’t look a concern on paper as it isn’t an overly strong R75 field. Should get his chance to go back-to-back.
3. Meloni (5) J: Craig Grylls 57kg 8×431 T: Robbie Patterson
Gossip (#13) closed off well from a long way back last start at Hastings without ever really getting into it, but not beaten far Into 6th. She comes here second-up, and that resuming effort suggested she would derive plenty of benefit from the outing. Stepping up in trip with that run under her belt looks ideal. Kelly Myers takes the reins, and from the good gate she maps to settle much closer. Can go close with natural improvement.
