Saturday’s Ladbrokes Doomben 10000 Day shapes as a key meeting during the Stradbroke Season, with a competitive nine-race card featuring quality across the board.
The track is currently rated a Soft 7, and with rain forecast in the lead-up, conditions are expected to play an important role throughout the program.
Six black-type races feature on the card, highlighted by a strong edition of the Ladbrokes Doomben 10000, which has attracted a high-quality field of sprinters.
The support program is also full of interest, including the Spirit Of Boom Classic, a race that carries added significance following the recent loss of the outstanding sire.
With depth, competitive fields, and plenty of betting angles across all nine races, it’s a meeting that promises plenty — so let’s get into our Doomben racing preview for Saturday.
MIDNIGHT DYNAMITE (2) returned in winning form over 1200m at Randwick, producing a strong on-speed performance.
The Bjorn Baker-trained gelding sat outside the leader and fought gamely to score in a close finish.
He will take benefit from that first-up run, is well suited at this distance, and performs well on affected ground, with a proven record on soft and heavy tracks.
From the inside draw, James McDonald should be able to give him a soft run.

GALANO (6) resumed with a strong performance at the Gold Coast over 1400m, finishing off well despite some interference.
The Matt Dunn-trained galloper has an excellent second-up record, winning three of his four attempts.
Although his mile statistics aren’t outstanding, he has previously won over this track and distance on heavy going.
He should appreciate the conditions and is expected to settle in a forward midfield position.

HIDDEN ACHIEVEMENT (2) resumed in the Hawkesbury Guineas where a wide gate saw him get back before running on into fourth.
The Chris Waller-trained colt returns to a track where he has performed well previously, including a placing in the JJ Atkins.
He will strip fitter second-up and has winning form on soft ground at this stage of a preparation.
Barrier 3 gives him the chance to settle closer in the run.

DREAM ROCA (9) resumed in the Dalrello Stakes and performed well behind a highly rated winner.
The form from that race looks strong, and he should improve stepping into this second-up assignment.
The Liam Birchley-trained gelding showed his class last preparation with a Karaka Millions victory second-up.
From the inside draw, he should enjoy a favourable run in transit.

WELWAL (2) impressed last start when taking out the Doncaster Prelude with a sharp finishing burst.
The Price & Kent Jnr-trained gelding has been freshened since that win and typically performs well in that state.
He is well suited on rain-affected ground and should benefit from a genuine tempo.
James McDonald can position him with cover before producing him late.

LONHRO’S QUEEN (6) resumes here and brings a strong first-up record, having won three of her four attempts.
The Munce-trained mare was successful first-up last preparation at Eagle Farm and has shown she handles wet tracks effectively.
With a likely fast tempo, she should be able to settle midfield and finish off strongly late with Tim Clark aboard.

NELLIE LAYLAX (8) returned with a solid effort last start, finishing second over 1835m in testing conditions.
The Annabel & Rob Archibald-trained gelding had to work early and cover ground, which made the task harder, but still hit the line well.
The step up in distance suits, and he is proven in wet conditions.
From the inside draw, Ben Thompson should be able to give him every chance.

PAYLINE (10) was excellent in last year’s edition of the Doomben 10000, finishing a half-length third in heavy going.
The Chris & Corey Munce-trained gelding comes into this year’s race in strong form, following solid performances in both the Ascot Handicap and Victory Stakes.
He is well suited at Doomben and relishes soft ground conditions.
Despite a wider draw, Kyle Wilson-Taylor should be able to find cover and have him finishing strongly.

ACCIDENTAL BID (8) has made a strong impression since joining the Ciaron Maher stable.
The import broke through at Pakenham before a dominant last-start victory over this distance.
That performance came on a heavy track, suggesting conditions here will suit again.
While this is a tougher test, he appears to have plenty of upside and, with the right run, can measure up.
