Matt Markham gives his best in all races at Alexandra Park Harness on Friday 1 May.
So much to like about the start to the career of Kawatiri Trev (1), four starts for three wins and was probably going to win in the only miss but for a late gallop. Won’t be up here just as a travelling companion and provided he handles the first look at Alexandra Park this line up doesn’t look to be one that will trouble him.
Selections: 1-8-10-12-11
1. Kawatiri Trev (1) J: Bob Butt 1011T: Paul Nairn
Some decent form on the board from Another Collect (2) in both runs back from a spell this time in. Lands a sweet draw in the most even field of the night here and from there should be out to make the most of it. No superstar, but a genuine performer in this grade and won’t be too far away from the action.
Selections: 2-9-4-10-3
2. Another Collect (2) J: Mark Purdon 14×22T: Barry Purdon & Scott Phelan
Proving pretty hard to catch at the moment is Hillbilly (9) but the nagging thought in the back of the mind is that if the right one turns up here tonight he’s more than capable of beating this field. It’s just a case of him showing up in the right mindset and doing everything right. Great each way play if that version arrives.
Selections: 9-5-4-7-3
9. Hillbilly (9) J: Emily Johnson 271p6T: Sean McCaffrey
Stonewall Stud product Ride The Waves (1) debuts here with a fair amount of breeding on his side and some good trial form under the belt too. Lands an ace draw and like that there’s been strong market support already, should be getting forward and playing a big role.
Selections: 1-3-10-5-14
1. Ride The Waves (1) J: Tim Williams T: Steve & Amanda Telfer
After a mishap on the Night Of Champions, Kyvalley Ray (2) was back to his very best here last week delivering a telling performance. Will only build from that too and with the aid of another good draw should be trotting onto the speed tonight and making them chase him once again.
Selections: 2-1-3-6-5
2. Kyvalley Ray (2) J: Blair Orange 11xd1T: Brent Lilley
Savaged in front at Addington last time out, Cath (2) was brave to the line in behind race rival Secret Wish. Major advantage at the barrier draws here tonight and with her gate speed, she’s drawn to lead and try and dominate this. On the markers is ideal and she gets a grand chance. Don’t like the price? Jump the futures tab and look for the Box Seat Boost.
Selections: 2-13-10-5-11
2. Cath (2) J: Seth Hill 81×12T: Brendon Hill
A lot to dissect out of last week’s Taylor Mile, but a little extra distance looks set to play right into the hands of Swayzee tonight. He was as flat as a biscuit at the 400m mark but lifted off the canvas to run a great third and with a bit more fortune early tonight can really make the others work here.
Selections: 7-1-4-2-3
7. Swayzee (7) J: Cameron Hart 12433T: Jason Grimson
NZ’s best 3YO returns to Alexandra Park tonight and in a cruel twist of fate for his rivals, Jumal (1) lands the perfect draw to claim yet another big race win. Should be able to hold up and even with a little mid-race pressure he’s shown he’s got the class to withstand anything and is the horse to try and beat.
Selections: 1-5-2-8-3
1. Jumal (1) J: Blair Orange x1113T: Steven Reid
Off the back of doing some really nice things in the last campaign it will be interesting to see how Memories (5) returns here tonight. Astute stable will have all the boxes ticked and we’ll be ready to go, just needs the manners and a little luck in running to be a major player.
Selections: 5-4-8-2-3
5. Memories (5) J: Todd Macfarlane 2378xT: David & Clare McGowan
By design of her staying nature, Black Beauty (2) is always going to be susceptible to runners who have done no work and are charging at her late. That said, there will come times when those chasing aren’t able to get past her and tonight looks one of those occasions. In front and rolling she’ll take some catching.
Selections: 2-5-1-7-9
2. Black Beauty (2) J: Matthew White x8235T: Matthew White
A first starter from a strike-rate stable with breeding on the side, Donegal Hill (4) is expected to run a big race here on debut. Manners, like in any maiden trot, will be key but with them and a clear bit of air at the right time, look for a big performance.
Selections: 4-5-11-6-8
4. Donegal Hill (4) J: Josh Dickie T: John Dickie
