Matt Markham gives his best in all races at Westport Harness on Friday 6 March.
History would show that ignoring a Paul Nairn first starter at Westport is a recipe for disaster so Kawatiri Trev (6) should immediately grab the attention. Some really nice trial form too and looks a horse who can win one pretty quickly. Manners there and it could be today.
Selections: 6-3-1-2-4
6. Kawatiri Trev (6) J: Stacy Whatuira T: Paul Nairn
Has made his way into this column a few times Whatsupman (1) and he keeps doing enough to keep you interested. Today he lands the ace draw and meets a race that looks well within range. Surely today is the day that it happens.
Selections: 1-5-4-3-9
1. Whatsupman (1) J: Robbie Close 74860T: Andrew Stuart
Nothing spectacular of late from Amici (6) but some really honest efforts that deserve to be rewarded with a victory. Finds the right race for it today with no real standout and if she can get onto the speed then expect her to be fighting out the finish.
Selections: 6-1-12-9-3
6. Amici (6) J: John Dunn 63440T: Robert & Jenna Dunn
In terms of high speed and ability, none in this field would match it with Joany Baby (1) on her right day. She’s run some cracking races in very good fields and she just needs to trot here and be close enough turning for home and she’ll run them all down.
Selections: 1-12-6-8-9
1. Joany Baby (1) J: Mia Holbrough 22058T: Denis O’Connell
After four very good runs at Addington in cracking maiden fields recently, Dancing N Heaven (6) looks so well placed here today. Runs have come in behind Brilliant Chase, Get Seaside Lucky, Sunsoutgunsout and Cee Whata Mickee so it’s a serious drop back and he should be hard to hold out.
Selections: 6-4-3-1-10
6. Dancing N Heaven (6) J: John Morrison 64533T: John Morrison
Really tidy run in his first go for the new stable by Prosperity (5) and with a bit of improvement should prove pretty hard to catch today. Has the speed to get handy early and with own terms, perhaps in front should go close.
Selections: 5-7-3-1-6
5. Prosperity (5) J: Kerryn Tomlinson 43653T: Matt Purvis
Really good trotting race this one with a few handy horses going around, Tribbiani (4) lands on top thanks to exposed form in good fields at Addington and the engagement of Sam Ottley. Manners the key, but with them should be able to make a serious play here.
Selections: 4-9-7-2-11
4. Tribbiani (1) J: Samantha Ottley 10266T: Kevin Townley
Won’t be easy off a big handicap but it’s hard to ignore the recent grass track form of Misty Blue (11). A big winner last week at Rangiora, she thrives on the green tops and with a nice drag into the race has a really telling turn of speed at the end of her races. Will be charging late.
Selections: 11-3-4-8-2
11. Misty Blue (0) J: Sheree Tomlinson 60101T: Ken Ford & Amanda Tomlinson
A win has been a wee while in waiting but hard to fault the efforts of One Over Da Line (2) of late all the same. Has been knocking around in some very good trotting fields and usually brings excellent manners so expect him to trot onto the speed here and give them all something to chase.
Selections: 2-6-7-1-3
2. One Over Da Line (2) J: John Dunn 32354T: Robert & Jenna Dunn
An inside draw and a horse in a good form all points toward a big run here from Foliejon Star (1). Has been fantastic lately and with the aid of the marker pegs throughout here should be right in the hunt and awfully hard to beat without any bad luck.
Selections: 1-4-2-9-11
1. Foliejon Star (1) J: Mia Holbrough 21223T: Bruce Negus
A winner here at Xmas time and after knocking around in some good fields at Addington lately, Matai Harry (11) drops back into a great grade here today. Will make his own luck if he needs too and without any bad luck looks a great bet to end the day.
Selections: 11-12-7-6-4
11. Matai Harry (11) J: Wilson House 86875T: Michael House
