Matt Markham gives his best in all races at Blenheim Harness on Friday 16 January.
A couple of very good second placings on the West Coast circuit from Chal Vee Power (4) should stack up pretty well in this field today. Stable is in red hot form and from a good draw should be to land in a good position early and be prominent throughout.
Selections: 4-10-1-3-5

Gets in nicely here as a race winner against some maidens and has won on a rain-impacted grass track before too so there’s a bit to like about Kowhai Sunburst (13). Can step the tapes quickly too, so the handicap might not be an issue and looks a live hope here.
Selections: 13-10-11-12-5
13. Kowhai Sunburst (0) J: Samantha Ottley 3p358T: Mark Jones
Two very good runs over at Nelson last week from Unico Tessa (12) including a luckless run on Sunday, Racing a bit more generously of late and in a wide open maiden can stalk them for the majority and then look to join in late and get over the top of them all.
Selections: 12-6-3-5-4
12. Unico Tessa (0) J: John Dunn 6p335T: Henderson Hunter
Prepared to forgive the Motukarara run of Breeny’s Conqueror (2) after he got too far back from a tricky draw. Better placed here from a nice marble and should be close to the speed throughout, Runs prior to the last one were all very good and on the grass so primed for a big run today.
Selections: 2-4-7-1-5
2. Breeny’s Conqueror (2) J: Gavin Smith 82340T: Simon Adlam
In terms of ability and potential, none probably measure up to Prestigious (10) in this field. His Omakau run was excellent and he should have taken good improvement from that. Big field here so needs to avoid bad luck but with the right run can be too strong for them.
Selections: 10-15-13-5-12
| 10. Prestigious (0) Scratched: | |||
Probably not many more deserving horses in Canterbury at the moment of a maiden win than Vesta (1). Has been running very good races in a nice fields. Lobs the ace draw here today which can be of huge assist and with a nice run just off the speed should be able to break maiden status here.
Selections: 1-11-9-6-8
1. Vesta (1) J: Tim Williams x2326T: Megan Swain
Good form of late from Always Bee Gee (4) and in decent fields too. Lands in a wide open one here today with a good draw to work from and is likely to roll forward and look to take bad luck out of the equation. In front with own terms would be hard to run down.
Selections: 4-3-2-10-7
4. Always Bee Gee (4) J: Kyle Cameron 45513T: Chris McDowell
Two brilliant efforts up at Nelson from Nellie Doyle (10) who just continues to improve and go from strength to strength. Big ask here off the 30m handicap with a decent sized field to get around but if she finds a bit of luck in running her class will take her a long way.
Selections: 10-11-9-6-1
10. Nellie Doyle (1) J: Blair Orange 71612T: Tim Trathen
Expecting Warrior Chief (7) to take big improvement out of the first up run at Rangiora on New Year’s Day. He’s a very talented pacer and while probably still on the way up, would only need to land on or near the speed here to be a live chance of success.
Selections: 7-9-5-8-10
7. Warrior Chief (0) J: Craig Thornley 840×7T: Jamie Gameson
Big winner on day two at Westport and then no luck at Reefton after getting the shuffle, Matai Harry (4) looks a big winning hope today. Very tough pacer who doesn’t mind doing a bit of work, but equally can be strong coming from off the speed. Should be in the right spot to launch an attack on this field.
Selections: 4-3-9-11-5
4. Matai Harry (4) J: Blair Orange 20515T: Michael House
Nothing wrong with any of the runs this time in from Henry Winkler (10) and it appears to be just a matter of time before he’s back in the winners’ circle. Tricky from the draw, but he can be strong through the line and looks a prime hope.
Selections: 10-2-8-3-11
10. Henry Winkler (3) J: Carter Dalgety 01443T: Sam Smolenski
Really strong efforts of late from Kowhai Star (10) and that can continue here, even from the draw. Had the better of Bettor Off by a fair way when they last met and coming from the off the second row actually looks a big assist to the chances.
Selections: 10-5-3-6-2
10. Kowhai Star (10) J: Samantha Ottley 16421T: Mark Jones
