Matt Markham gives his best in all races at Rangiora on Sunday, 14 December.
Handy enough runs of late from The Beach House (12) and he lands in here quite nicely too. Not a strong field of pacers, but very even and he’s shown a liking for be able to work into races late and get home over the top of them. Can do that here at a nice price.
Selections: 12-11-2-3-5
12. The Beach House (12) J: Blair Orange 07684T: Michael House
Looks a really promising trotter in the making does Trec Majestic (7) but like all maiden trotters on debut, manners will be the key. Bring them and in this field, well in play, don’t bring them however and we’re open to an upset.
Selections: 7-3-5-2-6
7. Trec Majestic (7) J: Ross Houghton T: Ross Houghton
Two good runs to open the career from Bettor Together (4) and the final 200m of the latest run at Oamaru was that of a horse who is ready to win a maiden. Lands in the right race here with the right draw and if on the speed then is the one to beat.
Selections: 4-5-1-9-11
4. Better Together (4) J: Wilson House 43T: Mark Jones
Really tidy run first up from a spell by Scotlyn Fortress (1) at Methven. Should go on with it too. Lands the ace draw and looks likely to be on the pace throughout and if able to repeat the first up run will just about win this.
Selections: 1-3-7-5-2
1. Scotlynn Fortress (1) J: John Morrison 59×2T: Dean Taylor
The wheel is finally turning back in favour of Jasprit Trouble (1) off the back of two very good runs in the last two. Generally does things right so should land close enough to the speed and with a clean run at them from the top of the straight will be hard to beat.
Selections: 1-17-5-2-11
1. Jasprit Trouble (1) J: Riley Harrison 55622T: Michael Heenan
Went down fighting at Orari last week from a horror draw but things set up a bit nicer here for Always A Menace (6). Racing in great heart at the moment and looks likely to roll forward and try and take control of this and with own terms can hold them all off.
Selections: 6-13-2-10-3
6. Always A Menace (6) J: John Dunn 21292T: Matt Brinsdon
He’s caught the eye in his last couple of starts, getting through the line well from tricky barriers but today sets up a whole lot better for Festus Haggen (5). A noted stand start beginner who could fly across here and find the markers and with a sweet trip can have the final say.
Selections: 5-17-11-8-16
5. Festus Haggen (5) J: Leo O’Reilly 81785T: Leo O’Reilly
Expecting Wilma’s Boy (15) to take plenty of benefit out of his run last week at Orari. Talented trotter when caught in the right mood and if he can begin well and get around them at some stage then he’ll take a lot of stopping.
Selections: 15-12-9-7-4
15. Wilma’s Boy (0) J: Bob Butt 110×6T: Paul Nairn
Sectionally, Lavra Rose (11) had no right to finish as close as she did at Methven. Massive effort. She’s got serious speed on the grass and today she only needs to settle a little handier to them early and she should be able to pick them up pretty quickly.
Selections: 11-1-8-13-3
11. Lavra Rose (11) J: Kimberly Butt 65394T: Derek & Adele Jones
It took an enormous performance from The Lazarus Effect to lift off the canvas and beat It’s Tough (13) last week and certainly no shame in defeat. Is going to develop into quite the Country Cups horse over the coming months and no surprise to see him monster this field today.
Selections: 13-12-14-10-16
13. It’s Tough (2) J: John Dunn 11193T: Robert & Jenna Dunn
Second behind I Dream Of Jeannie last week at Orari, Premium Player (2) looks really well served here from the good draw. Such a good stand start horse, he’ll lead and look to hand to the right one and with a sweet trip can reel them in late.
Selections: 2-10-5-9-8
2. Premium Player (2) J: Gavin Smith 48420T: Gavin Smith
Massive upswing in draws this week for the very quick Crystal (1). She’s going to get the perfect kind of trip for her here today and if no worse than three fence when they turn for home, she’ll have a bit too much speed for them.
Selections: 1-9-2-5-12
1. Crystal (1) J: Seth Hill 14100T: Bob Butt
