Matt Markham gives his best in all races at Geraldine Harness on Saturday 6 December.
Off the back of a couple of strong trial and workout performances, Son Of Doc (3) resumed in style with a strong finish at Motukarara a fortnight ago. Has always looked a horse with a bit of a future and should be quitting the maiden grade at short notice. Lands in here nicely and is the horse to beat.
Selections: 3-1-5-7-2
3. Son Of Doc (3) J: Blair Orange 560×2T: Rodger Austin
A late gallop at Motukarara last time offered no help for D J’s Gamble (4) but there’s an argument to suggest he was going to win before the mistake. Can’t afford to do that again here but if he brings the manners and is close enough turning for home then he’ll be hard to roll.
Selections: 4-8-7-10-3
4. D J’s Gamble (4) J: Sam Thornley 85T: Fred Fletcher
Two really strong runs since resuming from a spell by Moonlite CC (2) – both in pretty handy maiden fields. A little easier here perhaps and with fitness at a peak, whereas some rivals are first up, gets a strong chance to roll to the top early and not look back. One of the better bets of the day.
Selections: 2-4-7-6-3
2. Moonlite CC (2) J: Robbie Close 0x42T: Andrew Stuart
Big runs in the past two from Father Mike (2) indicate he’s closing in on another win. Checked at the wrong time at Motukarara which cost him victory and then blew the start before a big recovery for fourth and Oamaru. Needs to step, but handle that and he’s well in play in the big wide open field.
Selections: 2-7-9-4-15
2. Father Mike (2) J: Lawrence McCormick x7744T: Lawrence McCormick
A strong run of efforts recently from Semba (2) and often in good fields have the Stonewall Stud product knocking on the door of success. Finds a nice race today with some talented rivals but a good draw plays right into the hands and if able to step and perhaps find the trail then becomes the horse to beat.
Selections: 2-7-12-5-8
2. Semba (2) J: Tim Williams 03432T: Steve & Amanda Telfer
No doubt that Wilma’s Boy (15) is the best horse in this race. But the manners are often a little questionable. First up from a spell today but no worries in that regard with Paul Nairn always having his runners ready to go. Just needs to find his rhythm and he’ll be away here and likely too good for them.
Selections: 15-4-7-11-10
15. Wilma’s Boy (0) J: Bob Butt x110xT: Paul Nairn
No match for the class of Eun Sogno and Sonofamistery at Addington last time but Always A Menace (9) faces a nice wee drop down in grade here. Prior form to the last run had been excellent and as a former grass track winner looks well placed even from the wide draw. Should be right in the hunt.
Selections: 9-3-7-1-5
9. Always A Menace (9) J: John Dunn p2129T: Matt Brinsdon
A brilliant victory on Show Day and then a slightly luckless second in the Christian Cullen a week later have exciting pacer The Lazarus Effect (5) primed to dominate today. He’s headed toward the Invercargill Cup later this month and this looks the perfect stepping stone provided he handles the grass track.
Selections: 5-4-7-9-1
5. The Lazarus Effect (2) J: Bob Butt 14112T: Bob Butt
A return to the grass tracks can play right into the hands of Quicker Than Quick (4) here today. Going well and always steps it up a notch when faced with a green top. Nice draw in an even field and with a good run in transit should be hard to beat.
Selections: 4-18-7-2-14
4. Quicker Than Quick (4) J: Blair Orange 21306T: Graham Court
Coming into this off the back of a brilliant Gr.2 win last time out, I Dream Of Jeannie (9) looks really well placed today. Trotting mare in form and only 25m behind her rivals she should eat up the margin and be ready to strike at the right time.
Selections: 9-8-6-5-2
9. I Dream Of Jeannie (2) J: John Dunn 82001T: Robert & Jenna Dunn
Bouncing back to winning form last time impressively Burnham Girl (7) should be able to roll on with it here today. Front line draw is key as she can roll forward and take up a positive position and if she’s in front turning for home they’ll need to be good to run her down.
Selections: 7-2-14-9-6
7. Burnham Girl (7) J: Samantha Ottley 76041T: Mark Jones
