Matt Markham gives his best in all races at Ashburton Harness on Sunday 21 December.
Up from the south for this assignment and into a small horse field, things look good for November Nine (3) has done a really strong job in a short career and not being too far off them throughout running means she should be able to unleash on them late.
Selections: 3-2-4-1
3. November Nine (3) J: Matthew Williamson 13630 T: Carl Hanna
Classy three-year-old Tarragindi (6) looks to have this race at his mercy. In fact, his biggest danger might well be himself because he knows how to do the odd thing wrong. In terms of natural ability and speed though, nothing matches him here.
Selections: 6-4-5-8-7
6. Tarragindi (6) J: Matthew Williamson 13357 T: Phil Williamson
Down from the North Island having raced some of the better pacers in the land over the fast few months, Little Spike (13) comes with a last start runner-up effort behind Merlin. Hence the very price quote on offer. He can sit back and unleash over the last 800m and have this field at his mercy.
Selections: 13-12-10-8-7
13. Little Spike (13) J: Samantha Ottley 46122 T: Arna Donnelly
Motherhood, or at least pending motherhood, looks good on I Dream Of Jeannie (13). She’s low-flying. Into this beautifully given some of her recent assignments and her high speed at the business end of races means Ashburton is a perfect place. Can sit back and then swoop late and should be too fast.
Selections: 13-8-14-12-10
13. I Dream Of Jeannie (13) J: John Dunn 20011 T: Robert & Jenna Dunn
Dropping back from taking on some of the best mares in the country in her most recent starts, Dynasty looks well placed here. A high speed mare with better credentials than anything else in the field. Like others, she doesn’t have to get involved early but can rely on her speed to get her home.
Selections: 14-5-13-15-9
14. Dynasty (14) J: Bob Butt 75855 T: Bob Butt
On the march toward bigger and better things today looks a wonderful opportunity for Donna’s Boy (7) to take the next step. Loves the mobile, the confidence levels are sky high and he’s trotting beautifully. If he can find the markers, they’ll need to be good to beat him.
Selections: 7-9-5-8-3
7. Donna’s Boy (7) J: Bob Butt 15211 T: Bob Butt
An Addington winner last week, beating a good field, Amass (15) looks primed for a big effort on his home track here today. Good pacer who placed on Cup Day behind It’s Tough and has shown he’s a very adaptable horse. Work to do from the second row but good enough to overcome it.
Selections: 15-13-14-8-11
15. Amass (15) J: John Morrison 43901 T: John Morrison
She’s been somewhat underrated in some corners so far but Have A Little Faith (10) gets her chance to shine today. Big win on this track two starts back and anything close to a repeat of that here would win again. Just needs a little luck from the inside of the second row.
Selections: 10-11-9-8-7
10. Have A Little Faith (10) J: Samantha Ottley 23014 T: Phil Williamson
Heavily supported at Addington two weeks ago, Amaretto Franco (14) went close to success but had to settle for second. She’s trending back upwards though and has the class edge on most of her rivals here. She’s got real speed too, so look for her late.
Selections: 14-15-13-9-11
14. Amaretto Franco (14) J: Craig Thornley 67022 T: Steven McRae
It’s been a tough campaign for Empire City (14) having to take on some very good types as well as chasing off some big handicaps. Not the case here. She finds a race that looks right within her wheelhouse and if she runs up to her best form, she’ll win.
Selections: 14-13-12-2-7
14. Empire City (14) J: Brad Williamson 70930 T: Phil Williamson
Given he’s been mixing it with Got The Chocolates and Marketplace all season, boy this looks tailormade for Greased Lightnin (10). On the hit and run mission too after finishing second behind Captain Sampson last week at Alex Park. Best horse and should win.
Selections: 10-8-9-2-5
10. Greased Lightnin (10) J: Zachary Butcher 15542 T: Barry Purdon & Scott Phelan
Third in the Methven Trotters Green Mile behind Mighty Logan and Mr Love, Maui (13) has been mixing it with the best of the best this season. And he hasn’t disgraced himself either. This is a decent drop back and his reliability makes him the logical bet. Loves a short course at Ashburton too.
Selections: 13-12-5-11-8
13. Maui (13) J: Lawrence McCormick 40034 T: David McCormick
