The world number one extended her win streak to seven games but she wasn’t as dominant on serve against Maneiro as we could have expected. She won only 61% of 1st serve points which is well below par for her but was helped by winning the points that mattered – converting five of six break point opportunities. The defending Australian Open champion now faces a player that has started the season in fine style. Tauson won the ASB Classic in Auckland, where she defeated the likes of Keys, Kenin and Osaka. She crushed her most recent opponent but her 2nd serve can be a weakness. Nevertheless, she is playing well enough in the last fortnight to win enough games required for the Overs to hit.

Teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva continues to show poise beyond her years. She got the better of Uchijima 10-8 in a deciding set match tiebreaker and has now won the last four breakers she has contested. Meanwhile, Frech overcame Blinkova in one of the most unusual matches you will ever see. She lost the opening set 6-0 before handing Blinkova a bagel of her own in the second set and winning the third 6-2. She will not be afforded the same luxury against Andreeva as the youngster is relentless. Another good sign for Andreeva was winning 54% of 2nd serve points. If she can replicate those figures here, Frech will not be winning a set.

Gauff is yet to drop a set but was broken three times in her previous match. The high double fault count will catch up with her as the competition gets tougher but Fernandez does not fall into that category. The pair met at the United Cup a matter of weeks ago with Gauff posting a comfortable 6-3 6-2 win. The most important statistic in that match is that Fernandez was unable to generate a single break of serve and that leaves her with a mountain to climb here. We know that Gauff will break multiple times in each set but the lefty will need to match and exceed that if she is to cause an upset. Cannot see that happening.

After losing the opening set against Muchova 6-1, it looked as though Osaka would be heading for the exits. She leaned on her serve and it came up trumps as she won 12 of the next 16 games. She won 54% of 2nd serve points and more impressively, was able to generate 17 break opportunities. In contrast, Bencic is yet to drop a set but has been broken seven times in four sets played. Bencic leads the H2H 3-2 but the pair have not met since 2022. There have been 22 or more total games in the last three meetings between them and based on what we have seen from both of them so far in this tournament, this one will be going the distance.
