Top seed Madison Keys begins her quest for the title today and should get off to a winning start. Raducanu and Kenin are among the other bog names in action but one woman to watch closely is Yulia Starodubtseva who has spent the last 6 months slowly climbing the rankings.
This has been a great tournament for the Americans and they began the week with 10 of the 32 players in the main draw. That includes the duo of Anisimova and Parks but they will be losing one of them here. Parks is fresh of a WTA125 title success in the Open In Arte Angers Loire but that does not compare with the level of tennis that Anisimova has been producing. She beat Sabalenka and Navarro before losing in three sets to Pegula in Toronto’s WTA1000 event which is significantly stronger form than that of Parks. Anisimova is a genuine threat for the title here and has the power to hit through any of the other players in the draw.
Bronzetti has played most of her recent tennis at ITF/Challenger level. Her ventures into the main draw of WTA tournaments and the majors have not gone well. She was a 6-3 6-1 loser to Sabalenka at the US Open and lost in the opening round at the other three majors. Sabalenka is a good comparison to use here as like her, Keys plays on the front foot behind a big first serve. Bronzetti will not be able to match her power and does not have the strength to defend from deep in the court. The top seed will make a dominant start.
There is no better time to back against Raducanu than early in the season as a firm favourite agains a player ranked outside the top 100. Has failed to make it past the 2nd Round in 8 of her 9 Grand Slam appearances since winning the US Open and is consistently overvalued by the market. Montgomery beat Niemeier and Sun who are both in the draw this week and notably took a set of Sabalenka. Those form lines are strong enough to make her competitive here and she is also a lefty which is another bonus. She is a good bet in the games handicap market and straight up.
Twelve months ago Starodubtseva was ranked no.157 but she almost halved her ranking by October after qualifying for all four of the majors. Made the quarter finals in Beijing late in the season before a back issue saw her form drop off. Fresh to start off the new season, she is the best bet of the day. Is super consistent from the baseline and has displayed an uncanny ability to produce under pressure – especially in matches against comparable opponents. Don’t think her run ends her and can see her causing some upsets this week.
