Expert Tips on the 2026 Moir Stakes

Stay tuned for our expert tips and Moir Stakes betting predictions ahead of this year’s Group 1 feature in Victoria.

Moir Stakes Tips

Moir Stakes tips on which horse will win the next edition of the event flood in as the countdown to the important Melbourne sprint race heats up.

Moir Stakes tips on what horse will win the Moir Stakes this year are highly sought after by smart punters and racing fans every season.

When looking at Moir Stakes race tips it is important to consider factors including:

  • What horses in the Moir Stakes field are proven over the short sprint distance?
  • Who the key Moir Stakes trainers and jockeys are and what horses they have in the Moir Stakes field this year?
  • Moir Stakes barrier statistics and where your Moir Stakes betting selections are drawn.
  • Moir Stakes horses that have a good past record at the track.

How long does it take to know if you placed a winning Moir Stakes race tip? The event itself takes just under 1 minute for competing horses to run the 1,000m trip depending on track conditions.

The official Moir Stakes winner and winning Moir Stakes trifecta are known shortly after unless there is a protest or a photo-finish Moir Stakes result.

Moir Stakes Race Records

What was the fastest Moir Stakes winning time? Imperatriz set the current Moir Stakes race record saluting in 2023 in a slick time of 56.47 seconds over the 1000m.

What are the best Moir Stakes lead-up races to look at when placing a Moir Stakes bet?

Horses traditionally contested the Moir Stakes off an earlier spring lead-up in a race like the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at the same course and distance. However, a change to the Melbourne Spring Carnival line-up in 2024 sees the Moir run prior to the McEwen.

The last horse to complete the McEwen Stakes – Moir Stakes double in the same year before the change of date was Imperatriz (2023).

Interstate-Trained Horses in the Moir Stakes

Betting on the interstate-trained horses in the field is more and more popular as Moir Stakes tips favour the proven visiting interstate hopes from Sydney and Queensland-based stables.

Looking back over the Moir Stakes history and statistics shows that the last Sydney-trained Moir Stakes winner was Wild Ruler for Team Snowden, while the last Queensland-trained Moir Stakes champion was Pippie (2020).

From 2017-2025, six of the nine Moir Stakes winner were trainer outside of Melbourne with Coolangatta for Ciaron Maher & David Eustace and Gavin Bedggood’s Mornington-trained Mornington Glory the only locals to salute in that time.

New Zealand-bred horses also have a decent record in the Moir Stakes and make a good tip in the event.

The Australian-bred Imperatriz (2023) was the last New Zealand-trained Moir Stakes winner.

In an amazing feat for the locally bred sprinters, the last Moir Stakes winner foaled from outside of Australia was the Kiwi-born Our Egyptian Raine in 2003.

Moir Stakes Tips for a Trifecta

Moir Stakes tips for a trifecta cover the first three horses to officially go past the finishing post in the Moir Stakes results.

The horse to finish on top of the Moir Stakes trifecta is your Moir Stakes winner, the runner who outsprinted all their rivals and finished in the fastest time.

Placing a Moir Stakes trifecta exotic bet on the race is a great way to add to the thrill and potentially be rewarded with a generous pay-out.

A Moir Stakes trifecta is only successful if the three horses in your bet finish in the exact order you predict. Punters may choose instead to box their trifecta bets on the Moir Stakes to cover more finishing options and increase the chances of winning.

Adding the favourite into your Moir Stakes trifecta bet is a top tip as the favourites have an excellent recent strike-rate running in the money.

A.J. Moir Stakes betting takes place on the popular Moir Stakes race which is held at Moonee Valley Racecourse on a Saturday in early September annually.

Note, in 2026 the AJ Moir Stakes will run at Sandown-Hillside with Moonee Valley under redevelopment.

Conducted by the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC), the Moir Stakes is an early feature race at the Moonee Valley track over the all-important Melbourne Spring Carnival.

The Moir Stakes has been won by a host of turf greats including champion New Zealand mare Imperatriz (2023), Chris Waller’s versatile galloper Nature Strip (2019), and Robert Heathcote’s triple hero from Queensland Buffering (2012, 2014, 2015) in recent years.

Moir Stakes odds are offered on the esteemed Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival Group 1 event, and the field attracts a host of quality short-distance sprinters heading towards bigger and better features over the coming months.

The Group 1 Moir Stakes is one of Australia’s most popular horse races and has been run and won since 1976 when Scamanda became the inaugural champion.

Moir Stakes history shows the event is officially registered as the A.J. Moir Stakes but was known for a period from 1996 – 2011 as the Schweppes Stakes due to sponsorship.

The race’s official title is in honour of former Moonee Valley Racing Club chairman Alan John Moir KCMG who held the title from 1960-75.

The Moir Stakes holds a special place in racing history due to its prestigious list of past champions including Manikato, Schillaci, and of course the undefeated super mare Black Caviar who won in 2010 and 2011 and who has the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) race at Flemington in February named in her honour.

Traditionally taking place at Australia’s notoriously tight racecourse, The Valley or Moonee Valley which is dubbed ‘The Cauldron’, the Moir Stakes is a genuine short-distance test but did run over 1200m between 2007 and 2014.

Horses in the Moir Stakes field must be aged at three, and the event is contested at weight-for-age.

It has held Group 1 status since 2013, the year Samaready won.

The Moir Stakes is the second Group 1 race of the spring in Melbourne following the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield in late August.

Moir Stakes Winners

Notable Moir Stakes winners throughout history include:

Manikato (1982): Champion sprinter and Australian Racing Hall of Famer who joined Kingston Town as then then only two $1 million stakes earners in Australia. His impressive CV included victories in the Blue Diamond Stakes (1978) and Golden Slipper (1978) as a two-year-old and five victories in the William Reid Stakes.

Schillaci (1992): Eight-time Group 1 winning son of Salieri trained by Lee Freedman who proved a super sprint saluting in events like the Newmarket Handicap, Oakleigh Plate and Lightning Stakes which he claimed twice.

Miss Andretti (2007): This star mare made history as the first thoroughbred in racing folklore to hold five track records at the same time in both Australia and England. From Perth to the big stage in Europe she won plenty of the world’s best sprint races.

Apache Cat (2009): The baldy-faced Apache Cat developed a cult-like status over his 43-start career that included 19 victories, eight at elite level, and saw him secure just shy of A$4.6 million in earnings.

Black Caviar (2010-2011): The Queen of the Turf, Black Caviar and her famous black and salmon polka dot silks claimed national attention as Peter Moody’s ‘Black Flash’ went on to win all 25 of her career starts proving an equine freak. She won plenty of events more than once including a three-peat in the Lightning Stakes – a race now named in her honour – and put it to the internationals when just saluting in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes in the UK in 2012. Sadly, this legendary mare would pass away a day shy of her 18th birthday in August of 2024.

Buffering (2012, 2014, 2015): Iconic Queensland champion prepared by Roberth Heathcote and the only three-time Moir Stakes champion to date.

Nature Strip (2019): Chris Waller-trained legend who retired a nine-time Group 1 winner including famously saluting in the TJ Smith Stakes three times. A dual Australian Racehorse of the Year and three-time Australian Sprinter of the Year he also etched his name in racing folklore with his The Everest victory in 2021.

Imperatriz (2023): Mark Walker-trained New Zealander who won 10 Group 1 races across Australasia including completing the Moir Stakes – Manikato Stakes – Champions Sprint treble in 2023. One of her more notable New Zealand victories was in the Railway Stakes.

Mornington Glory (2024): Scored an upset all-the-way win in the 2024 Moir Stakes at big odds to hand trainer Gavin Bedggood his first Group 1 win. The track specialist made it a hat-trick of wins at the track and trip.
