BBL Tournament Format and Rules

Match format: The BBL is a T20 format of cricket, which differs from the other main forms of cricket (Test match/first class and one day/List A) in a few key ways.

T20 cricket allows for just 20 overs per side, meaning matches are short and fast-paced, with a strong focus on attacking batting and defensive bowling/fielding.

Unique rules: T20 cricket in the BBL is also characterised by fielding restrictions (the ‘Powerplay’ and ‘Powersurge’) which keep fielders in certain positions. Play is also restricted by an innings clock, which aims to ensure the final over of each innings occurs within 79 minutes of the first ball being bowled. Failure to comply incurs fielding penalties.

Tournament format: The BBL season in 2024-25 will have 44 matches – 40 during the regular season, three knockout finals and a final to decide the season champion.

Big Bash League Finals Format

The BBL finals format for the 2024–25 season sees the tournament come to an exciting finale over four must watch games, with only the top four teams qualifying.

•  Qualifier: 1st v 2nd

•  Knockout: 3rd v 4th (loser eliminated)

Popular Betting Markets for BBL Matches

The BBL is always popular with punters, both on season-long bets and in-game markets.

Here are some of the overall markets you’ll find:

  • Overall winner: Who will lead the Big Bash League ladder this year? Early favourites the Hobart Hurricanes are the team to beat at time of publish, with the Sydney Sixers and Brisbane Heat tipped to perform well.
  • To reach the final: Bet on who you think will play off to win the BBL this season. We’re seeing plenty of punters tipping the Hurricanes, but every team is in with a shot.
  • Top 4 finish: The final four teams will compete in a knockout finals series to win. Think you know who’ll be there this year? We’ve got the market for that.
  • Top tournament run scorer: Will one player dominate the batting this year? Take a punt on your best big hitter.
  • Top tournament wicket taker: There’s always a player doing damage for the bowling team and this is the market to predict it.

You’ll also find a wide range of in-game betting markets, including:

  • Top run scorer (team): Who will score the most runs for their team? You be the judge.
  • Top bowler (team): Predict who will take the most wickets from one particular team.
  • Top run scorer (match): There’s only one overall top run scorer in each match – bet on who it’ll be.
  • Player to score 10/15/20+ runs: Bet on who will score runs – over 10, 15 or 20.
  • Player to hit 1+ fours/sixes: All they have to do is hit a single four or six and you’re a winner.
  • Player of the match: Tell us who the best player of the match will be.

Match Winner Odds

The classic head-to-head match outcome bet is still a favourite. While the quality of teams varies from year to year based on player movement and availability, it can be a very exciting market and an easily approachable starting point for punters. As always, you’ll get lower odds for the match favourite – so choose your bet carefully.

Top Run Scorer Betting

The only way to win in cricket is to score more runs than the opposition and, in a fast-paced league like the BBL, it can all come down to one single player. Players like Chris Lynn have dominated the batting in recent years but, with the best players coming Down Under for the summer, there’s stiff competition.

Think you know who’s going to score the most runs in a given match? Have a punt with us at TAB NZ, where you’ll find the best odds for top run scorer betting.

Total Sixes Betting

Big hitting is the big attraction of T20 cricket and, just like the rest of the crowd, punters want to see plenty of sixes. This market lets you take a punt on how many sixes you think will be struck for the match – that’s the total of all batters from both teams combined.
