Notable AJ Moir Stakes Winners

There have been many quality winners since the race debuted in 1978.

The AJ Moir Stakes has been won by some of Australia’s most celebrated sprinters, with champions such as Schillaci, Manikato, and Placid Ark all adding their names to the Moir Stakes past winners list.

Manikato was one of the best sprinters to grace the track in Australia, and he helped pave the way for future sprinting stars. However, it was Black Caviar who rewrote the history books when it came to standout wins.

She is arguably the greatest sprinter to ever race, and her back-to-back victories in the Moir Stakes were superb. She won the Moir Stakes before it was a Group 1 contest, so her Group 1 tally should have been higher.

The Moir Stakes has been a stepping stone to international racing as well, with Miss Andretti, Black Caviar, and Nature Strip performing well at Royal Ascot.

AJ Moir Stakes History

The AJ Moir Stakes has a long and proud history, first being run in 1976. It carried the AJ Moir Stakes name through to 1995, when Schweppes became the race’s sponsor.

The race returned to its original name in 2012, before stepping up to Group 1 status the following year. Given the calibre of horses it attracts year after year, that promotion was hardly unexpected.

Buffering holds the record for the most wins, claiming victory three times. Among the jockeys, Damien Oliver leads the way with four wins, beginning with Schillaci in 1992 and finishing with Apache Cat in 2009.
