Waverley Tips & Preview | Friday 24 July

Waverley hosts an eight-race program on Friday, with the track conditions a Soft7 and the rail out 3m from the winning post to the 320m cutaway, with the remainder in the true position. The forecast is mostly clear in the wider Taranaki region until around midday on raceday, which may see the track improve towards a Soft6 come the first, however conditions could deteriorate rapidly through the day if the expected rain arrives.

Race analysis and betting strategy for each of the eight races below:

Waverley Race 1
1 Manorbier

Manorbier (#1) is a 4yo Sweynesse gelding heading here as a 13-start maiden for Ralph Manning. He comes here off a solid effort for 3rd at Rotorua, where he sustained an early looping run but peaked late. He could well settle a touch closer to the speed from the wide gate in this small field, in what looks a race lacking an abundance of pressure on paper. He won’t be concerned by the track being in the worst end of the Soft range either. Looks to find a soft contest here to break through for his maiden win.

Waverley Race 2
1 Brutiful Lass

Brutiful Lass (#1) comes here off a game effort for 2nd behind progressive 3yo Yaldy Time. She remains at 1200m which looks to suit, as well as retaining the services of leading hoop George Rooke. Expect her to get back in the field from the wider draw, however she shouldn’t be standing the leaders too big a start in this small field. Can go one better here.

Waverley Race 3
7 Sight Unseen
Each Way

Sight Unseen (#7) is a locally trained 4yo mare resuming for the Thurlow/O’Malley stable. She showed glimpses of ability last campaign, last sighted finishing a close-up 5th here over 1650m back in January. She has the benefit of a recent trial to ready her for this assignment, where she strode out nicely on a Heavy track to win that hit-out. Going off that trial, she should cope with the conditions fine should the downpour arrive at this stage of the day. Can run a bold race on her return.

Waverley Race 4
3 She’s A Boss

She’s A Boss (#3) was doing her best work late into 2nd at Avondale last start, getting home best of the beaten brigade behind speedy filly Gin And Bare It. Off that effort, getting back out over 1400m should suit, and she again maps to settle off the speed from her middle draw under George Rooke. Any downgrade of the track come this stage of the day will only play into her hands. Can go one better.

Waverley Race 5
2 Satomi

Satomi (#2) is a grinding staying type who comes here off a last-start 5th at Te Rapa, where he stayed on nicely from the back of the field. The additional 100m here should only play into his hands as he’ll just keep on strongly to the line, and the possibility of rain arriving ahead of this race would only enhance his chances. While he draws handily, he isn’t typically quick to muster as a general rule and will likely settle back of midfield as a consequence. Can be finishing over the top of these late.

Waverley Race 6
8 Arksey
Tip of The Day

Arksey (#8) comes here off a brave effort for 2nd at Woodville, where he kept on nicely to the line under a big weight in that highweight contest. He looks suited back in a standard R75, where he finds himself right down in the weights carrying just 55kg here. Stepping out over ground for the first time on what may become a testing track is a slight query, however he has shown in the past that he revels in testing conditions. Can go one better here.

Waverley Race 7
9 Hollaback Girl

Hollaback Girl (#9) gave a big sight last start when running 2nd to Kyanite Man at Otaki, where she skipped away turning for home before being reeled in late, with a big gap back to 3rd. This looks a comparable maiden field and she maps to again settle up on speed from her middle draw under Amber Riddell. Her last-start 2nd rated well enough to suggest she would only need to repeat that effort to be taking plenty of beating in this. Gets a good chance to go one better.

Waverley Race 8
16 Rippanall

Rippanall (#16) comes here off a game effort for 3rd at Hawera last start, where he worked forward from a wide draw and stuck on gamely to not be beaten far. He looks suited getting back on to his home track and should strip fitter for that last-start effort now heading here third-up. Expect George Rooke to be positive early and have him settling not too far from the speed from his middle draw. Looks to find the right sort of race to bounce back to winning form.
