Woodville hosts a competitive 10-race program on Friday, with the track rated a Heavy10 and the rail in the true position. While conditions are forecast to be clear and mild leading into raceday, the significant rainfall earlier in the week has already taken its toll and only limited improvement is expected.
Selections for each race below:
La Chica Bella (#8) is a 3yo daughter of Telperion who comes into this at just her second career start. She produced a very good debut effort at Hastings when finishing 2nd, only being grabbed late after hitting the front inside the final 100 metres. She should have taken plenty of improvement from that experience and looks to have found a winnable maiden assignment here. The Hastings surface that day was effectively closer to a Heavy10 on times, suggesting the testing conditions here should hold no fears. Looks hard to beat.
8. La Chica Bella (9) J: Kelly Myers 55.5kg 2T: Jim Wallace
Ebony Bassett (#13) is a 3yo Wootton Bassett filly making her debut for Allan Sharrock. She has had just the one public trial, back in October, where she strode out nicely on a Soft7 surface. She has been given plenty of time and looks to have found a very winnable maiden field here. Kelly Myers takes the ride from a wider draw, which may prove advantageous if riders are looking to steer away from the fence. Bold debut showing expected.
13. Ebony Bassett (8) J: Kelly Myers 56.5kg T: Allan Sharrock
Ena Sharples (#7) is a 4yo mare resuming for Allan Sharrock, notably a half-sister to well accomplished mudlark Justaskme. She put together a pair of strong runner-up performances during her first preparation, both of which came on Heavy tracks. Kelly Myers takes the reins from a middle draw and should have her settling back of midfield before making her run on the better ground away from the fence. The conditions look ideal and she shapes as a leading contender.
7. Ena Sharples (8) J: Kelly Myers 56.5kg 2255XT: Allan Sharrock
Feint To East (#11) resumes for Andrew Forsman after being last seen on a Good4 track at Pukekohe in February. Her recent trial performances have been particularly encouraging, with both hit-outs coming on Heavy tracks. Those trial efforts suggests she will relish the conditions here despite being first-up. Drawn favourably, she should enjoy a midfield run with cover and looks set to receive every chance. Should take plenty of beating.
11. Feint To East (3) J: Elen Nicholas 56.5kg 50XT: Andrew Forsman
Satomi (#2) ran an excellent race for 2nd at Hastings last start, finding the line strongly despite being held up between the 600m and 400m. He appeared to relish the testing Heavy conditions on that occasion and looks set to strike very similar ground again here. He generally lacks early speed and is likely to settle midfield at best from the inside draw Looks the best bet on the program.
2. Satomi (2) J: Jonathan Riddell 58.5kg 65752T: Paul Nelson & Corrina McDougal
Quid (#6) comes into this third-up following a game 3rd at Otaki, where the Soft5 surface may have been a touch sharp for him. He should now be nearing peak fitness and the return to a Heavy10 track looks a significant positive. He maps to settle on speed in what appears only a moderately run contest and should be given every opportunity to grind his rivals into submission late. Looks the one to beat.
6. Quid (6) J: Jack Taplin 58kg 40X23T: Kevin Myers
Chart The Stars (#6) resumed with an impressive win at Hastings on a testing Heavy track, circling the field from the rear to score stylishly. She was more than five months between runs heading into that effort and should only strip fitter second-up. Remaining at 1200m on another Heavy surface looks ideal and she should again be launching down the outside in the better ground. Looks a strong each-way chance at attractive odds.
6. Chart The Stars (13) J: Floor Moerman 57.5kg 837X1T: Josh Shaw
Florin (#4) effectively comes into this second-up after her encouraging 4th at Te Aroha, where she closed off nicely behind Grande Gallo over 1150m. The rise to 1400m looks an ideal progression and she should be suited by settling back off what appears an even tempo before being saved for one run late. With the track likely to be very testing by this stage of the day, conditions should play perfectly into her hands. Looks the horse to beat.
4. Florin (9) J: Elen Nicholas 56.5kg 4X734T: Michael Wallace
Eagle Rock (#4) was disappointing first-up at Hawera, where he he couldn’t go with them late on the Soft5 surface. He should take improvement from that outing and appears much better suited stepping out to a mile second-up. The prospect of a genuinely testing Heavy track late in the day looks a major positive and may be the key to seeing him run an improved race. At long odds, he appeals as a speculative each-way play in an even contest.
4. Eagle Rock (5) J: Madan Singh 59.5kg 308X8T: Kylie Little
Our Giulia (#7) has had four runs this preparation without showing anything to get overly excited about, but there are reasons to expect improvement here. Much of her best form has come on rain-affected tracks and the return to a Heavy10 surface may help. She also drops back into R60 company, where she finds a much softer race as a result. At long odds, she could run a cheeky race.
