We’ve added to our voluntary Minimum Bet Limits (MBLs) to make sure TAB punters can win their fair share.
Since 2022, Punters Promise has guaranteed every customer the chance to place a bet to win at least $2,000 on races in all three New Zealand racing codes. We’ve now expanded Punters Promise to New Zealand Future Win markets, Australian racing, and to key sporting markets.
We’ve also set a new industry standard by extending Punters Promise to 12 of our biggest sports, and the biggest competitions and tournaments in those sports, where you can bet to win up to $1000 on the most popular option. This includes NRL, EPL, the NBA and 30 other competitions across all those sports.
With a bigger and bolder Punters Promise, there’s now a betting option for everyone.

How does Punters Promise on New Zealand racing compare to Australian betting operators and their MBLs?
Australian betting operators are forced to comply with the terms and conditions of each state’s racing administrative body, so they’re not offering the MBLs by choice. This also means that there are varying thresholds in place and different conditions which makes it very confusing, but we’ve simplified it.
While $500 is the lowest threshold (provincial harness and greyhounds), TAB adopts the highest threshold ($2,000) in Australia (which exists for metropolitan thoroughbred racing) for Punters Promise, across all three New Zealand codes.
This now increases to $5000 for New Zealand thoroughbred meetings on a Saturday, Friday night harness meetings, as well as other key dates outside these days, such as the NZ Trotting Cup (on the second Tuesday in November).
In Australia, most of these MBLs only apply on the day of the race meeting. We’re committed to letting you have a fair crack from the time that we release our odds, so Punters Promise will apply as soon as the market is available to bet on.
What markets/options are subject to Punters Promise?
Punters Promise applies to fixed odds (Final Field) Win markets, the most popular racing products. All other markets are subject to normal betting limits.
Why did we choose a $2,000 limit on all three codes?
To give you an equal opportunity, and to make it a simple rule across all three racing codes, we settled on the $2,000 threshold. With more betting activity around key racing days of the week, we have been able to provide the $5,000 limit on Saturday thoroughbreds and Friday night harness.
How do I become eligible for Punters Promise?
If you bet through your TAB account, then Punters Promise will apply to all of your bets which meet the above criteria.
I want to back two horses/greyhounds in a race, does Punters Promise apply for each runner?
Yes. If you want to back two (or more) runners in a race, then we will guarantee to sell you a bet to win $2,000 on both/all horses.
Does Punters Promise apply on a horse I like in a big race in the coming weeks and months?
Yes, Punters Promise now applies to Futures Win markets available on New Zealand thoroughbred and harness racing at tab.co.nz/racing/futures.
How about Australian racing?
Although we’re not required to follow minimum bet limits in Australia, we offer you, from the time that odds become available, these ‘bet to win’ amounts:
- Australian metropolitan thoroughbreds: $2,000
- Australian non-metropolitan thoroughbreds: $1,000
- Australian harness racing: $1,000
- Australian greyhound racing: $500
