Preview
It is not the final we predicted prior to the start of the season but nobody can deny that they have earned their place in the final. PSG have broken the hearts of three English clubs to get here (Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal) but will now have to contend with a very different opponent in the form of Inter. The Italian giants have caused a series of upsets to get here – knocking out heavyweights Bayern Munich and Barcelona. They say styles make fights and the alternate tactics of the two teams should ensure a thrilling contest. PSG like to dominate possession and build their attack while Inter have made a living in this competition with their lethal counter attack.
Stats That Matter
With a single win from their first 5 groups games, PSG were in danger of failing to qualify for the knockout stages but what has happened since has been quite phenomenal. They won 9 of their next 11 with a total of 30 goals scored across those games. The duo of Dembele and Kvaratskhelia have been phenomenal out wide which has unlocked the wing backs (Hakimi and Mendes). Inter will relish the role of underdog here as it will allow them to play exactly how they like – get numbers behind the ball, close down the space, turn over possession and hit on the counter. They are no strangers to playing without the ball and had only 29% and 28% in the two games against Barcelona. They still managed to score 7 goals across the two matches and have scored 2+ goals in 7 consecutive Champions League games.
Prediction
The Europa League final was a dull contest but there were no complaints after tipping Spurs to lift the trophy ($2.10) and the 1-0 correct score ($8.50). Despite Inter being categorised as a defensive side, this game will be anything but boring to watch. PSG have played the best football of any team in the competition this season and will stay true to themselves by playing an expansive/attacking style. Similarly, Inter will employ the defensive system that allowed them to pick apart teams and rely on the class of Martinez, Thuram and Dumphries to convert their opportunities. Can see this one going to extra time where ANYTHING can happen!
Tips
Best Bet: Both Teams To Score – YES ($1.75)
