Trackside commentator Mark Rosanowski provides his tips for all 12 races at the Palmerston North Greyhounds meeting on Thursday 17 April, 2025.
Auckland Cup winner was brave when second to a handy hound in his first attempt at this distance. 5 Opawa Shirley is a keen railer that found herself in bother here a fortnight ago. Money has come for her this morning. Hold your breath at the first bend.
Selections: 3-5-1-8
Won a six-dog qualifying trial in a c5 time on Friday so she clearly has the ability to win on debut. Is nearly three years old so it has taken a while to get to the races. Her Mum could skip around here pretty quickly. 5 Carrington Magic is from a nice litter. Has speed & should appreciate the drop back in distance.
Selections: 6-5-2-4
Tenacious second running past 4 Barry Bowler from the same trap last week here. Fourth at Hatrick was ok as she’s not as good there & was hampered early by 3 Big Time Bullet who was to her outside that night.
Selections: 5-4-3-2
Nailed late on this track by a dog that has won since then ran a fair fourth after a slow start at Hatrick. No excuses today. 6 Hendrix Ruler is a promising southerner that won on debut here. Jumps another class though.
Selections: 1-6-3-4
Easy winner on this track when resuming & nearly got up down the straight track on Monday.
Selections: 4-7-2-5
Was handy in a far stronger field before being bumped off balance into the first bend a fortnight ago. Inside draw is a major plus for her.
Selections: 2-4-7-5
Former c5 dog downgrading & dropping back in distance fresh. Trialled well enough on Friday. 4 Adobe Underworld will benefit from a big drop in class.
Selections: 10-4-7-5
Carved across from box 8 to beat a good field here two starts back & his straight track third on Monday had merit. 7 Fool Me Once won that straight drag & he has a super record here.
Selections: 6-7-5-2
Excels on the horseshoe tracks but he will be tested by the step up to 720m today. He might create a big enough gap over 3 Grande Vue Ace to hold her out but she has had his measure over 755m at Hatrick. 7 Tess has 700m credentials & is still on the up as a stayer.
Selections: 2-3-7-6
Steamed to an impressive win in tricky conditions here on April 8 running a touch quicker than 3 Jane’s Panama on the day. That pair should get you through the quaddie leg.
Selections: 5-3-8-2
Has been superb in his previous visits here & he will have to be again to beat this calibre of field. Had a good dress rehearsal for this at Ascot Park last week. 6 Jerry Cola is the NZ Derby winner who can be risky at the start & bombed it here two starts back in a sprint. 5 Let Him Cook is an enigmatic chaser that gunned Jerry down at Ascot Park eight days back. Worth the risk at the odds. Cracking field.
Selections: 7-6-5-8
Should get a safe early passage which will be critical in a highly competitive field. Was hampered here two starts back then was run down by two strong dogs at Hatrick. 6 So Strict was a brave 660m winner here. Has run fast over this distance in the past & is generally a reliable beginner.
