The build-up to the 2026 Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival continues at Caulfield on Saturday, with four black-type races adding real depth to the program.
The Group 3 Vain Stakes and Quezette Stakes shape as sharp contests for the three-year-olds down the straight, while the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes over 1400m brings together several well-known runners.
Wet track form looks crucial with rain still around Melbourne, and at time of writing, the track is rated a Heavy 8.

FUNDAMENTAL NATURE (10) resumes for Ciaron Maher and brings some upside after winning her first two career starts earlier in the year.
The daughter of Exceedance ended her autumn campaign down the track in a Group 3 over 1200m at Caulfield, but she had excuses after being caught five-wide throughout.
Her previous run reads well for this, finishing a length away in third behind the talented Getta Good Feeling in the Inglis Sprint. That form gives her a strong profile for this race, provided she handles a wet track for the first time.

SIMURGH (4) has drawn awkwardly, but he still looks one of the more reliable chances in an open race.
The Hayes stable has kept him fresh since his Sandown run in mid-June, where he rolled forward as usual and kept finding the line strongly to finish second.
He has had a couple of tick-over trials since, which should have him ready to go, and his proven wet track form is a clear positive. If Craig Williams can get across without doing too much work early, he has the fitness and pattern to take catching.

GLASGOW LASS (5) is second-up for Matt Laurie and looks open to further improvement.
She was posted wide and settled well back at Caulfield over 1200m last start, but worked home strongly late to finish third behind Custom.
The rise in trip should suit, and she may benefit from a more positive ride under Logan Bates. With wet track form in her favour and the claim helping at the weights, she profiles as one of the main winning chances.

HE’LL RIP (8) has been racing consistently and continues to look close to another win.
The seven-year-old son of Hellbent has been around the mark in recent starts, including a runner-up finish in a similar race over this track and distance in early June.
He has placed again in two runs since at Caulfield and Sandown, and has been kept up to the mark with a recent straight trial here. His wet track record is a positive, and Blake Shinn taking over with 3kg less in the saddle could be important.

CLOSER TO FREE (2) looks to have returned in good order judging by his recent jump outs.
The Street Boss colt showed quality early in the autumn when winning the Blue Diamond Prelude by a length over subsequent Golden Slipper winner Guest House.
Things did not work out for him in his grand final from a wide gate, but his trial work suggests he is forward enough fresh. With added maturity now as a three-year-old, he looks well placed to run a strong race first-up.

RIVERINA LULU (10) looks a progressive sprinter and may be a touch overlooked in the market.
Graheme Begg’s filly showed plenty of ability on debut over 100m shorter down the straight at Headquarters, where she had to lift between runners before lengthening well and scoring by 1.5 lengths over Leopard Shark.
She has had close to a month between runs, but her recent jump out win suggests she has held her condition nicely. The wide draw creates a tactical query, but she has a good turn of foot and appeals as a solid each-way chance.

William Pike making the trip across to ride the Peters-owned COSMIC CRUSADER (7) is a key factor.
The six-year-old gelding by Maurice resumed with a strong 2.5 length win in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield, settling back in the early stages before improving into the race around the turn.
He was too sharp late on that occasion, and the manner of the win suggested he should take benefit from it and be suited getting further second-up. With only 0.5kg more to carry and a likely position close enough to the speed from the wider draw, he is hard to knock.

PERSIAN SPIRIT (6) resumes from a break after contesting stronger races through the autumn.
Symon Wilde’s six-year-old was competitive without winning during that campaign, with his fourth in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate, beaten 4.5 lengths, a strong piece of form for this grade.
His fresh record of five starts for two wins and three placings is a major positive, while he has also been consistent at the 1200m, missing the money only twice from six attempts. He looks a genuine each-way hope.

LIGHT INFANTRY MAN (3) brings the strongest overall profile into this race and should command respect first-up.
Ciaron Maher’s gelding has not raced since the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in April, where he finished midfield from the inside barrier at Randwick in a solid overall performance.
The mile fresh suits, and he should be comfortable in wet conditions provided the track has not reached the heavy range by this stage of the day. With two soft trials behind him and a draw that allows him to go forward early, his class is a major asset against this field.
