Penrith and Canberra (86 points at 17.2 per game) are tied for the second-best record.

In the past three rounds, the Warriors have restricted their opponents to 12 points or less in three straight games for just the third time in their history. The Auckland Warriors gave up exactly 10 points in three consecutive outings in 1995 (against fellow expansion newcomers the Reds, Crushers and Cowboys), while Ivan Cleary’s 2010 combination remarkably conceded exactly six points three games in a row (against the Eels, Panthers and Storm).

The Warriors’ best regular season in terms of points conceded was 2007, when they gave up just 18.08 points per game on average. Next best was Stephen Kearney’s 2018 side (18.63), who shaded Webster’s 2023 Warriors (18.67) by a solitary point across 24 home-and-away matches.

The Warriors haemorrhaged a club-record 700 points at 29.17 per game in 2022.

SJ climbs club’s leaderboards

With his 213th game for the Warriors on Saturday, Shaun Johnson moved ahead of Ben Matulino into fourth place on the club’s all-time appearances register.

Barring disaster Johnson will also pass Manu Vatuvei (226 games) this season, but he’d need to go around again in 2025 and play almost every game in back-to-back grand final campaigns to run down second-placed Stacey Jones (261).

Simon Mannering remains the club’s runaway leader with 301 appearances.

It’s nevertheless a remarkable show of durability from Johnson, who spent three injury-hampered seasons at Cronulla (playing 44 games) before returning to the Warriors in 2022. He averaged 20.8 games in his 10 seasons with the Warriors prior to 2024 and should have 300 NRL appearances in his sights if he re-signs for 2025.

Meanwhile, Johnson’s two-try display against Rabbitohs – for which he earned the maximum six Dally M votes, despite the compelling claims of Wayde Egan and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad – took him to 76 at NRL level for the Warriors.

That’s just one behind Jones, who boasts the second-most tries in Warriors history (Vatuvei holds the record with an untouchable 152 tries). Last year Johnson scored eight tries – double his next-best tally from the previous six seasons.

Johnson’s two try assists lifted him to an amazing 215 in his NRL career. His 1,165 points for the Warriors are a comfortable club record, almost 500 in front of second-placed (you guessed it) Jones.

Daly grind

The Warriors are shooting for three straight wins over Manly at Mt Smart Stadium when the teams clash this Saturday, having snapped a three-match losing run against the Sea Eagles via a come-from-behind 29-22 home victory in Round 25 last season.

The Warriors’ overall record against Manly (13 wins, 27 losses from 40 games, a win percentage of 32.50) is their worst against any current NRL rival. They are just 5-11 against the Sea Eagles at Mt Smart since 1995. The Warriors’ worst period was from 2008-17, winning just two of the clubs’ 18 encounters – and losing a preliminary final and a grand final at ANZ Stadium.

Few players in the club’s existence have tormented the Warriors quite like Daly Cherry-Evans, who last weekend passed Cliff Lyons as Manly’s appearances record-holder in his 310th NRL game.

A tryscoring spearhead in the Sea Eagles’ 2011 grand final win over the Warriors, he also crossed for the late match-winning try in an 18-point comeback in Perth in 2012, and kicked deadlock-breaking field goals to clinch victories in 2016 (in golden point), 2017 (off his left foot in golden point, after slotting an equalising field goal late in regulation time) and 2021.

In a run of 15 matches against the Warriors from 2012-21, Cherry-Evans accumulated 23 Dally M votes (under the old one-judge, 3-2-1 format) – including the maximum three on five occasions. He also nabbed two from one of the two judges in a losing effort at Mt Smart last year.

A victory will give the Warriors a 4-2 start for just the seventh time in the club’s 30-season history. All previous instances besides the first, 1996, translated into finals football later that year; the Warriors made the Top 8 after going 4-2 or 5-1 in 2002-03, 2007, 2018 and 2023.

Number crunchers

No shortage of stats monsters in the big win over the Bunnies:

What a return for Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, who racked up game-high tallies of 263 metres and five tackle-breaks to go with a line-break and two try assists (after Taine Tuaupiki and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck managed just one between them from fullback in the first four rounds).

Big metre-eating contributions also from Addin Fonua-Blake (192m), and wingers Marcelo Montoya (169m) and RTS (165m). Tuivasa-Sheck is fourth in the NRL for all run metres with Fonua-Blake ninth (second among forwards), Tohu Harris 15th and Mitch Barnett 23rd.

Jackson Ford made a line-break for the fourth straight week and scored his third try in four games – after managing just six in his first 58 NRL appearances.

Ford and Wayde Egan topped the Warriors’ tackle count with 39, while Te Maire Martin made an impressive 22 stops in the halves in his first top-grade outing of 2024.

Egan had two line-break assists that led to tries, while Martin produced two line-breaks, a try and a try-assist. Martin’s 85 running metres was almost double his 2023 average, while Egan’s 91 metres was also well above his 2023 average (51m).

[7
["post-862","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-rugby-league
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.6 -
