The women\u2019s team pursuit recorded the fastest qualifying time and look to be genuine gold medal contenders, while Thomas Saunders competes in the one-person dinghy gold medal race and Eliza McCartney, Imogen Ayris and Olivia McTaggart all will contend for gold in the women\u2019s pole vault final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nThe start list is set for the men\u2019s 400m final, and it\u2019s set to be a thrilling event. The 2023 world champion Antonio Watson had a sudden drop in form, failing to qualify for the Jamaican team for Paris, opening this field up, but there are a few clear-cut gold medal contenders on top of the list.<\/p>\n

Great Britain\u2019s Matthew Hudson-Smith was the man gaining the most hype heading into Paris on the back of his London Diamond League win, in which he ran a season-leading 43.74 seconds. That moved American Quincy Hall down to second place on that leaderboard, having recorded a time of 43.80 just one week earlier, but new contenders have emerged in qualifying.<\/p>\n

2012 gold medallist Kirani James stamped his mark with a 43.78, indicating that he will remain in the medal hunt. In that same qualifying race, Zambia\u2019s Muzala Samukonga ran 43.81 to set a personal best and force his way into the conversation, but Hall looks like he has the goods in Paris.<\/p>\n

The only man who\u2019s recorded multiple sub-43-second runs in 2024, Hall is peaking for Thursday morning. Having run his season best 43.80 just three weeks ago and after following that up with a 43.95 in qualifying, he\u2019s every chance to win gold.<\/p>\n

\nOne of the marquee events of track cycling in Paris will draw to a close early on Thursday morning. New Zealand\u2019s team is made up of Bryony Botha, Emily Shearman, Nicole Shields, Ally Wollaston and the quartet are a real chance of bringing home some metal, with some strong showings over the past year.<\/p>\n

A second-place finish at last year\u2019s World Championships (Shields has since replaced Michaela Drummond) will give the kiwis a real confidence boost heading into Thursday morning, but in front of them at that meeting were a strong Great Britain team who found themselves as the betting favourites to win gold heading into Paris.<\/p>\n

However, a blistering qualifying time of 4:04.679 from the kiwis had them over half a second quicker than the next best qualifier, the USA, and has catapulted New Zealand into favouritism for Thursday morning\u2019s showdown. That time from the Kiwis was just 0.45 seconds off the world record, set by Germany in Tokyo, and a step up in the final could well see a new world record \u2014 and gold \u2014 claimed by the women from Aotearoa.<\/p>\n

\nThe women\u2019s pole vault has been one of the most anticipated for Kiwis since Eliza McCartney\u2019s rise to fame in Rio and there is real excitement heading into Thursday morning\u2019s event. McCartney, as well as fellow New Zealanders Olivia McTaggart and Imogen Ayris, qualified successfully for the final, making for must-watch viewing on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n

McCartney was the only one of the three to clear 4.55m in qualifying, as McTaggart and Ayris both failed their three attempts at that height, and it\u2019s fair to say that the 2016 bronze medallist is Aotearoa\u2019s best chance at a medal here. She\u2019s ranked fifth in 2024, having recorded a 4.84m clearance in February, and a return to that form would likely see her in medal contention on Thursday morning. Ayris has a season best of 4.57m, while McTaggart is 6cm better off, posting a 4.63m effort in Finland in June.<\/p>\n

The expected front-runner in this event was Great Britain\u2019s Molly Caudery. The 24-year-old has enjoyed a rapid ascent in the women\u2019s pole vault world, clearing 4.92m in Toulouse just six weeks ago to record the best clearance of 2024 so far but she failed to clear 4.55m in Monday night\u2019s qualifiers, meaning she is no longer in contention.<\/p>\n

The title of favourite now sits with Australia\u2019s Nina Kennedy. Kennedy comes to Paris hot off a Diamond League win in London, clearing 4.85m, as Alysha Newman finished second and Caudery third. That\u2019ll give the Aussie a big boost heading into this event, but with the likes of Angelica Moser (4.88m), 2020 gold medallist Katie Moon (4.85m) and Newman (4.83m) having recorded strong season bests, this is a relatively wide open field.<\/p>\n

However, the consistency of Kennedy gives her a good chance of finishing with gold. Looking at standalone clearances this season, removing Caudery from the equation, Kennedy has two of the top three (4.88m and 4.85m) and that gives her a good chance of performing strongly and finishing with gold around her neck.<\/p>\n

\nSomething out of a Hollywood movie is potentially going to play out on Thursday morning. Current world record-holder Mykolas Alekna of Lithuania is looking to repeat his dad\u2019s feat of winning gold in this event in 2000 and 2004, and good luck to anybody trying to get in the way of him achieving that.<\/p>\n

Alekna has been on a tear in 2024, breaking a 37-year-old world record with a whopping 74.35m throw in April, and he\u2019s continued to rack up the monster throws since, with three further 70m+ efforts.<\/p>\n

The second-longest throw of the year belongs to Samoa\u2019s Alex Rose. He recorded a massive 71.48m throw in May, and while he hasn\u2019t been able to replicate that effort since, a 66.18m throw in his last meeting, winning the NYC Grand Prix.<\/p>\n

Slovenia\u2019s Kristjan Ceh will be one of Alekna\u2019s big contenders, having won the World Championships in 2022 before winning silver last year. His 70.48m to win the Diamond League meeting in May is the fifth-longest throw of the season and proves that he will be ready to pounce if Alekna is anywhere below his best.<\/p>\n

Daniel St\u00e5hl is the defending champion and will be expecting to leave Paris with a medal, but his 2024 form has been mediocre. His best throw of the season came back in May and his best effort in July only came in at 66.99m. Australia\u2019s Matthew Denny (69.35m) and Jamaica\u2019s Ralford Mullings (69.67m) have strong season bests and could come into the equation for a podium finish.<\/p>\n

\nCherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan have been on a tear in Paris, going on an unbeaten run to finish on top of Group A before recording a 2-0 win in their first knockout game in the Round of 16. Such is their dominance, the men from Qatar have dropped just one set in their four matches so far, and their victory over the heavily favoured David Ahman and Jonatan Hellvig of Sweden marked the as a real chance of improving on their Tokyo bronze.<\/p>\n

In their way on Thursday morning are the American team of Miles Partain and Andy Benesh. The men from the USA have won three on the bounce, responding well from their opening defeat against Cuba. That first-up loss would have been a shock to the Americans, but the way that they have responded indicates that they are ready for their run in Paris to continue, having upset Brazil and Italy on the way. They will need to pull off another upset if they are to make it to the semifinals, but that looks to be a bridge too far. The Qatari pair have won three of their last four against Benesh and Partain, but two of which went to three sets and this is another one that will go the distance.<\/p>\n
