Portland suffered their first taste of defeat on Friday, losing to Memphis 103-124. The game got away from the hosts late in the third quarter, as Memphis got out to a double-digit lead, and things only got worse in the fourth, as Portland’s offence dried right up. With just 20 points in the fourth and 45 in the second half, it was an underwhelming offensive showing at home, with their trusty transition offence not being as potent as it has been this season and their 12\/49 shooting from deep, including 5\/23 in the second half, making their offence stagnant. Ja Morant started hot before cooling right off and leaving the game with an injury, but Deni Avdija was a consistent force with 24 points, nine rebounds and seven assists but the likes of Damian Lillard, Jrue Holiday and Scoot Henderson struggled with their shots, leaving Portland’s offence short-handed. Donovan Clingan was a force on the other end, with five blocks and eight rebounds.<\/p>\n

Utah gave San Antonio a real scare on Thursday, taking last season’s finalists to overtime before falling 111-117. Utah were well outplayed in the extra period, with San Antonio going on a rapid 12-0 run to put the game out of the hosts’ reach and send Utah down to a 1-4 record. There were plenty of promising patches from Will Hardy’s men, including a big start to the game which saw them get out to a 16-9 lead, and they built on that to lead 46-35 midway through the fourth. However, their offence dried up as the game went on, ending on a 102.8 offensive rating, and their biggest downfall was their lack of transition opportunities, finding just nine transition plays across the 53 minutes. San Antonio, on the other hand, had 20 transition plays for 24 points, and a below-par shooting night did them no favours either. Ace Bailey hit his shots for 19 points and Keyonte George top-scored with 31, but he needed 27 FGAs to get there and had five turnovers in a rollercoaster night.<\/p>\n

Morant (hamstring) has been ruled out four 4+ weeks but Robert Williams III may well return for Portland after missing the last contest. Lauri Markkanen (wrist) is also a chance of returning for Utah and that will help them keep competitive in this showdown. While the hosts are 1-4, they have had a difficult schedule and have the length and energy to slow down Portland’s guards. Avdija will be a problem, but George and hopefully Markkanen will be more than a handful for the visitors, making Utah appealing as big home underdogs.<\/p>\n

San Antonio did what they needed to do in Utah on Thursday, picking up a valuable win on the road but they had to do it the hard way, requiring overtime for the 117-111 victory. It wasn’t the most convincing of offensive performances from San Antonio, but a 12-0 burst in less than two minutes in overtime powered them into a 117-108 lead and there was no coming back for the hosts, making it three wins on the bounce and lifting SA’s record to 3-2. Victor Wembanyama was the pick of the bunch again, finishing with 36 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks to be a +14 in his time on the floor. It was largely a poor offensive display from the rest of the squad though, as they really struggled from the midrange and from three, going 16\/52 on all jumpers to level out the game and give Utah a chance. Their defence did enough to alleviate for their offensive woes though, restricting the hosts to just five made baskets at the rim, in a dominant interior performance.<\/p>\n

Minnesota breezed past the Clippers 127-101 on Saturday to get their first win since Anthony Edwards’ knee injury. It was a dominant showing from the outset from the hosts, with a 21-7 run late in the first making it a double-digit quarter-time lead, before Minnesota really ran away with the win in the fourth, on the back of a 23-2 run. It was a dominant offensive showing, wrapping up with a 127.0 offensive rating, as LaMelo Ball and Jaden McDaniels both got in on the fun. Ball dropped 24 points and seven assists and McDaniels had 23 points and seven assists, as the two proved to be a dynamic pairing, while Rudy Gobert again impressed defensively. Bones Hyland had 19 points and eight assists against his former team to rub salt in the Clippers’ wounds.<\/p>\n

On night two of a back-to-back, we may see Chris Finch rest Ball or McDaniels, but even if he doesn’t this MInnesota offence has a tall task in front of it. They’ll have tired legs and San Antonio have enjoyed two days off, but more importantly, this is a very tough matchup for Ball and his loose ball-handling and playmaking. San Antonio’s offence will have its struggles too, having been only mediocre this season, and I don’t expect a stack of points.<\/p>\n

Houston’s unbeaten run ended on Saturday in a 111-116 loss to Dallas. Starting their in-season tournament, Houston had a Texas derby without Alperen \u015eeng\u00fcn (back) in front of them, but the class of the hosts was laid clear in the fourth, and Houston had no answer. Leading 84-76 heading into the final quarter, Ime Udoka would have been feeling good about his team’s chances, but their defence crumbled as Kyrie Irving found some vintage form to score a slew of pretty points, finishing the quarter with 16, and Cooper Flagg again showed off his sophomore with some big-time buckets, scoring 11 points in the quarter to hand Houston the loss. Kevin Durant tried to keep the visitors’ points coming, as did Fred VanVleet, but \u015eeng\u00fcn’s absence was sorely felt. Durant finished with 28 points, VanVleet had 16 points and six assists and Amen Thompson had 15 points, six assists and four steals, but the teams’ late-game woes saw them taste defeat in Dallas.<\/p>\n

The reality of Oklahoma City’s injury crisis hit them on Thursday, as they fell to Dallas 96-120. It was a sobering result for the previously undefeated OKC, as they stumbled to a 99.0 offensive rating and shot a poor 44.3% eFG%. It was a relatively tight contest through the first two quarters, but Dallas started to pull away in the third, before making it a blowout in the fourth, where the visitors scored just 15 points as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander sat out the whole quarter. That saw Josh Dix play the entire 12 minutes and Bennett Stirtz and Brooks Barnhizer, underscoring just how much of an injury crisis the 2025 champions are in. On top of the season-ending injures to Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace, Chet Holmgren (knee – out for 8+ weeks) and Alex Caruso (ankle) sat out Thursday’s contest to further hurt their depth. Ajay Mitchell impressed again, with 29 points, three assists, two steals and one block and SGA had 21 points but his usual efficiency wasn’t there, with just a 48.5% TS%. Isaiah Hartenstein tried to keep his team in the game with 10 points and 14 rebounds but he couldn’t do much as Dallas powered their way to victory.<\/p>\n

\u015eeng\u00fcn will likely be back on Sunday while OKC will be without Caruso again, making it a very thin squad. With SGA steering the ship and Mitchell and Hartnstein there as back-up, this is still a solid team, but I can’t see them troubling Houston. The size and athleticism of Houston present a real challenge to this form of OKC, and they’ll look to exploit the likes of Aday Mara, Jared McCain and Bennett Stirtz for as long as they’re on the floor.<\/p>\n
