The 2026 Melbourne Cup Carnival is just around the corner, and Wednesday\u2019s Ladbrokes Bendigo Cup is one of the traditional lead-up races to watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The celebrated country cup has attracted 15 runners for its Group 3 renewal, including recent St Leger Stakes winner So You Are and Kings Valley, runner-up in last Saturday\u2019s Moonee Valley Gold Cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are nine races on the card. The track is currently rated a Soft 7, with conditions expected to improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mick Price and Michael <\/span>Kent <\/span>Jr\u2019s <\/span>filly was <\/span>slow <\/span>away <\/span>and <\/span>settled <\/span>well <\/span>back, <\/span>then <\/span>failed <\/span>to <\/span>make <\/span>an <\/span>impact <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>straight, <\/span>finishing <\/span>nearly <\/span>five <\/span>lengths <\/span>from <\/span>the <\/span>winner.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her first-up run at Sandown was much more encouraging. She settled near the rear before producing a sharp turn of foot down the outside <\/span>to finish second. A genuinely <\/span>wet <\/span>track <\/span>could <\/span>be <\/span>a <\/span>test, <\/span>though <\/span>she <\/span>handled <\/span>heavy <\/span>conditions <\/span>in <\/span>a <\/span>recent <\/span>Cranbourne <\/span>jump-out. <\/span>The <\/span>drop <\/span>back <\/span>in <\/span>class <\/span>also <\/span>appeals.<\/span><\/p>\n

SEMANTICS (15)<\/strong> is worth serious consideration if she gains a start as first emergency.<\/p>\n

The Godolphin filly was still learning when she broke her maiden here three weeks ago, winning over 100m shorter as the odds-on favourite. She produced a well-timed run down the middle of the straight and pulled away to score by 1.25 lengths.<\/p>\n

She handled the wet conditions well and appeared to have plenty in reserve at the finish. This is a tougher test, but she has scope to improve, with Ethan Brown retaining the ride.<\/p>\n

MELEK <\/span>(7)<\/span><\/strong> is <\/span>in <\/span>solid <\/span>form <\/span>and <\/span>looks <\/span>capable <\/span>of <\/span>making <\/span>his <\/span>presence <\/span>felt <\/span>for <\/span>Ciaron <\/span>Maher <\/span>and <\/span>connections.<\/span><\/p>\n

The lightly raced five-year-old <\/span>has <\/span>produced <\/span>two <\/span>honest <\/span>runs <\/span>recently <\/span>at <\/span>Ballarat <\/span>and <\/span>Seymour. <\/span>Despite <\/span>an <\/span>awkward <\/span>start <\/span>at <\/span>Seymour, <\/span>he <\/span>worked <\/span>home <\/span>from <\/span>midfield <\/span>to <\/span>finish <\/span>third.<\/span><\/p>\n

John Allen suggested after that run that Melek would appreciate a longer trip. With the pair stepping up <\/span>to <\/span>2400m <\/span>for the <\/span>first <\/span>time, <\/span>he <\/span>should <\/span>have <\/span>the <\/span>chance <\/span>to <\/span>settle <\/span>back <\/span>and <\/span>build <\/span>into <\/span>the <\/span>race <\/span>before <\/span>finishing <\/span>strongly.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was a frustrating run for his supporters at $4.60, as he was held up badly <\/span>along the rail before <\/span>being <\/span>forced <\/span>to shift <\/span>out. <\/span>He <\/span>finished <\/span>1.2 <\/span>lengths <\/span>behind <\/span>Savannah <\/span>Chill, <\/span>whom <\/span>he <\/span>now <\/span>meets <\/span>better <\/span>at <\/span>the <\/span>weights.<\/span><\/p>\n

With a couple of runs under his belt, <\/span>he can <\/span>get <\/span>closer <\/span>with <\/span>even <\/span>luck. <\/span>If <\/span>he <\/span>finds <\/span>cover <\/span>and <\/span>handles <\/span>the <\/span>heavy <\/span>track, <\/span>he\u2019ll <\/span>be <\/span>a <\/span>major <\/span>chance.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Rich Enuff gelding finished down the field from a wide draw over the same course and distance to close out his winter campaign, then faced a tough assignment first-up at Caulfield, where <\/span>he <\/span>raced <\/span>wide <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>straight.<\/span><\/p>\n

His overall record of <\/span>eight <\/span>starts <\/span>for <\/span>four <\/span>wins, <\/span>a <\/span>second <\/span>and <\/span>a <\/span>third <\/span>is <\/span>impressive, <\/span>and <\/span>he <\/span>has <\/span>won <\/span>good <\/span>races <\/span>over <\/span>this <\/span>distance <\/span>at <\/span>Geelong. <\/span>Back <\/span>in <\/span>grade <\/span>and <\/span>drawn <\/span>more <\/span>favourably, <\/span>he <\/span>looks <\/span>a <\/span>key <\/span>chance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Graham Begg\u2019s mare has been in excellent form this preparation. She resumed with a two-length victory over 1200m at Sandown, producing a powerful turn of foot despite racing three wide.<\/p>\n

She took another step forward second-up at Cranbourne, making ground from midfield over 1400m after again covering extra ground. With a jump-out between runs and proven wet-track form, she looks tough to beat.<\/p>\n

The lightly raced four-year-old has been consistent throughout his eight-start career. After the Guineas, he finished fourth over a mile at Caulfield on a very wet track before closing his campaign with another placing at Headquarters.<\/p>\n

A recent jump-out suggests he\u2019s forward enough for 1400m first-up. He\u2019ll likely settle near the back from his draw and look to finish strongly.<\/p>\n
