Philadelphia are 2-0 after a tough couple of outings to start their season, following on from an opening night win over New York to beat Cleveland 114-106 on Friday. It was a wild night at Xfinity Mobile Arena as the hosts came back from the 45-69 halftime deficit to surge home and continue their winning start to their campaign. It was utter dominance for Philadelphia in the second half, winning 69-37, as Jaylen Brown and Tyrese Maxey each had 17 points, while Joel Embiid scored 15 and LeBron James had 12, as Cleveland saw their lead fade away. The hosts were able to regularly get out and transition as they took advantage of Cleveland’s 15 turnovers in the second half, which allowed Philly to run riot, going 21\/35 from two-point range in the second half to slam the door shut on the visitors. Maxey was the standout on the night, playing 42 minutes and scoring 32 points and dishing out six assists, while Jaylen Brown had 21 points and eight boards. Joel Embiid had 24 points and seven rebounds. LeBron James had a less efficient evening but still finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and three steals.<\/p>\n

Milwaukee, on the other hand, are 0-2 after a 125-132 loss to Chicago on Saturday. Now on night two of a back-to-back, a lot is being asked of this Milwaukee squad and they looked rather uninspiring against Chicago. The disappointing aspect for Milwaukee will be that they held a 121-118 lead with less than four minutes to play, but they went on to score just four more points as Chicago continued to keep the scoring coming, resulting in back-to-back losses for the hosts. There were some bright spots for Milwaukee, with Jaime Jaquez Jr scoring 19 points on just 11 shots to go with 11 rebounds and five assists, while Tyler Herro had a big scoring night with 34 points and four assists. However, the likes of Myles Turner and Ryan Rollins were disappointing offensively and some uninspired defensive play across the board, but particularly from Turner, Ousmane Dieng and Kasparas Jaku\u010dionis saw Milwaukee come up empty handed.<\/p>\n

LeBron (back) has been listed as questionable for this game, with this one being essentially a free win, while Dean Wade (ankle) may be in for his first game of the season after being listed as questionable. Regardless of that pair playing, we’re going to see a dominant showing from Philly and it’s hard to see just how Milwaukee are going to score on them regularly, with a real lack of playmaking against an experienced defence. These two teams have been in the bottom half of the league in terms of pace to start the season and I am going to take the under.<\/p>\n

Atlanta blitzed Charlotte for a 128-81 victory on Saturday to improve to 2-0. It was dominance from start to finish, with a 33-20 quarter-time lead expanding to a 68-43 halftime buffer, and Charlotte failed to close the gap from there. While it was a good offensive showing from Atlanta, it was their defence that won them this game, restricting the hosts to just an 81.8 offensive rating and forcing 25 turnovers, including picking up 17 steals. Dyson Daniels had almost half of them, with seven steals of his own in just 24 minutes of action, along with 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists and one block. Jalen Johnson excelled offensively, posting 19 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and three steals and Nickeil Alexander-Walker added 14 points and five dimes. It was a good showing from Aaron Wiggins off the bench too, with 19 points in 22 minutes, rubbing salt into Charlotte’s wounds.<\/p>\n

Houston have also started 2-0 this season, with a big 114-110 win over their Texas rivals, San Antonio, on Saturday. Despite being a bit of a dog fight, Houston often looked like the team in control, before San Antonio rallied to a 103-104 lead with less than five minutes to play. It remained scrappy down the stretch, but that worked in the visitors’ favour, as Alperen \u015eeng\u00fcn scored six consecutive points to give Houston a comfortable buffer, before Kevin Durant delivered the dagger three. KD was super tidy offensively again, with an efficient 20 points and six assists, but \u015eeng\u00fcn was the star with 29 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Amen Thompson had 20 points, 10 boards, two steals and two blocks and Steven Adams was reliable in a short stint off the bench for his season debut.<\/p>\n

We may well see one or two players rested here in this back-to-back, with Adams being a likely candidate, but that shouldn’t take away from the appeal of this showdown between two unbeaten squads. It is obviously early days, but neither team will be wanting to have their first taste of defeat and I have Houston continuing their winning form on Sunday. Durant has been on-form, \u015eeng\u00fcn looks more complete this season and their athleticism will wear down Johnson, in turn slowing Atlanta’s offence down. I think this is a good matchup for the visitors, making them value as slim dogs.<\/p>\n

Phoenix were humiliated in their season opener, losing to Portland 83-124. It was a shocker of a display, especially offensively, posting a miserable 85.6 offensive rating and shooting just 35.7% from the floor. The fact that it took Phoenix over six minutes to score their first points of the season said it all about their performance, with virtually every player who stepped on the floor failing to make a positive impact. Devin Booker had a good shooting night on his way to 23 points, but the likes of Dillon Brookes, Miles Bridges, Jalen Green and Collin Gillespie were awful. Getting the start at centre, Khaman Maluach produced little, but backups Duop Reath and Rasheer Fleming at least showed some fight.<\/p>\n

It’s only two games in, but Golden State have had a horror start to their season. After a big 105-127 loss to the Lakers in their opener, they crumbled late against Memphis on Saturday, giving up a 0-17 run in the clutch, seeing a 106-94 lead turn into a 108-111 defeat. It was an inexcusable collapse on both ends of the floor, and while Memphis did hit some tough shots in that run, Golden State certainly had their chances to respond on the other end and simply couldn’t come up with the goods. Steph Curry missed some big shots, as did Brandon Williams and Brandin Podziemski, and although Curry had a rather efficient 34 points and four assists, he was left needing more support. Yaxel Lendeborg had 18 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and three steals and Podziemski had 18 points, but their bench struggled for production and new starting centre Graham Ike looked out of his depth in that role.<\/p>\n

There will likely be no Curry, and there will be no Podziemski for Golden State on Sunday, and that leaves them in a big hole in the backcourt. De’Anthony Melton and Williams will likely take on starting duties, but that leaves little to no back-up resources and that’s going to be tough against a dogged Phoenix side that will be wanting to redeem themselves at home after their opening stinker. I can’t see this game ending well for an undermanned Golden State on the road.<\/p>\n
