Detroit have received a lot of attention in the offseason after crashing out in the second round as the first seed, before ugly and public contract negotiations with Jalen Duren marred much of their summer. That was eventually resolved just weeks ago, seeing Cade Cunningham link up again with his running mate as they gun for the #1 seed once again. Nobody would have been expecting Detroit to pull of a 60-win season last year, but as their suffocating, second-ranked defence helped them rack up the victories, the #1 seed followed. Tobias Harris, Caris LeVert and Isaiah Stewart have all departed, with John Collins and Isaiah Joe coming into the fold, ensuring that JB Bickerstaff has a deep squad at his disposal.<\/p>\n

Boston had a drama-filled offseason, as they traded away Jaylen Brown for Paul George to clearly hold Jayson Tatum as their number one man. Mitchell Robinson, Mike Conley, Devin Carter and first-round pick Chris Cenac Jr also join the squad, making it a very rich roster for Joe Mazzulla. Derrick White, Payton Pritchard, Baylor Scheierman and Hugo Gonzalez add a lot of backcourt options and Sam Hauser, Neemias Queta and Luka Garza are all solid bench options. Factoring in Mazzulla’s elite regular season coaching record, Boston will be a regular season force and that sets up a fascinating opening game.<\/p>\n

This Boston side is going to be a run-and-gun outfit and that’s going to limit the effectiveness of Detroit’s rugged defensive style. The visitors are going to get up a lot of threes regardless of Detroit’s defensive play and Boston certainly have the defensive versatility to limit Cunningham and Duren. That sets up a tough matchup for Detroit and I will be betting against them as favourites.<\/p>\n

New York rose to great heights in 2026 to win their first championship in 53 years, defeating San Antonio 4-1 in the finals to cap off a dominant postseason run. They lost just three games all playoffs, with Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns both having excellent series to take NY to glory, and with a near-identical roster in 2026\/27, they will be wanting another ring on their fingers. It’s essentially a straight swap at backup centre, with Andre Drummond coming in for Mitchell Robinson, while James Wiseman also won the last roster spot and may factor in the bigs rotation. Outside of that, Mike Brown will have a very similar squad to work with, as OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, Miles McBride and Landry Shamet all return.<\/p>\n

Philadelphia’s roster had a significantly larger shake-up in the offseason, trading Paul George for Jaylen Brown and signing LeBron James to bring in two all-stars to join Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid. Anfernee Simons, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Dean Wade and first-round draft pick Labaron Philon Jr also come into the squad to make it basically a complete switch-up in roster spots other than Embiid, Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, as well as bench pieces Adem Bona and Dominick Barlow. It’s obviously a very good starting unit for Philly but they’re going to have to stagger them across the game with their lack of depth and that’s going to make for some disjointed lineups, especially early in the season.<\/p>\n

New York enter the season fully healthy and if they can even replicate some of their postseason form from 2026, they’re going to get off to a winning start. It’s going to take time for Philly to gel and I have to bet against them as just 5.5-point favourites on the road.<\/p>\n

We get a tantalising Western Conference Finals rematch on opening night and I get the sense that it is going to be a spicy affair at Frost Bank Center. San Antonio didn’t go the distance last year, falling to New York 1-4 in the finals, but with such a young team, few would have been tipping to have even made it that far. With Victor Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle all back for another year, and with Tobias Harris joining in the offseason, San Antonio will be expecting another visit to the big dance. Add in the fact that Devin Vassell, Julian Champagnie, Keldon Johnson and Luke Kornet are all back in the fold, and it’s easy to see why San Antonio are some people’s title favourites.<\/p>\n

Oklahoma City are also firmly in that conversation. The 2025 champions looked every bit as dominant in the 2025\/26 regular season, powering their way to 64 wins to be the #1 seed but they couldn’t use that homecourt advantage to full effect in the postseason, losing the WCF Game 7 at home to San Antonio. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander made it back-to-back MVPs and looked better than he ever has, but the ill health of Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell really hurt OKC in the postseason, leaving SGA with too much ball-handling responsibilities. That duo is reportedly fully healthy to start the season, which is a big boost for Wednesday’s clash, and will likely see an elite starting team of SGA, Williams, Cason Wallace, Isaiah Hartenstein and Chet Holmgren. Mitchell will feature heavily off the bench, as will Jared McCain, Alex Caruso and Jaylin Williams, but the losses of Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins in the offseason will really hurt them as a regular season team, with their perimeter depth taking a real blow.<\/p>\n

I like the addition of Harris for SA in this matchup, being a good spacer and a big body for Holmgren or Hartenstein to match up with. San Antonio won eight of 12 games (regular season and playoffs) against OKC last season and while Mitchell and Williams’ returns will make some difference, I think Wemby’s interior defence is such a kryptonite for OKC. A lot of their players like to score at the rim and now with even less shooting at their disposal, they’re going to have to try and beat SA on the inside, which I am going to bet against.<\/p>\n
