Bay of Plenty on Saturday. Heading to Tauranga against a good Steamers outfit, few would have been picking a win for the Turbos, with the market having them as 18.5-point underdogs at kick-off, but they proved their doubters wrong in emphatic style. Potentially making the win even more impressive was that it was a poor opening 50 minutes from the visitors, as they threw away a slew of good scoring opportunities, but once things clicked, there was no slowing down Manawat\u016b. Mosese Bason got the scoring started, powering over from close range, before Joseph Gavigan did the same just 10 minutes later for a 14-12 lead. The Turbos never looked back from there, this time with Feleti Sae-Ta&#8217;ufo&#8217;ou showing his strength, before Rory Woods put the cherry on top with five minutes to play to bank the bonus point win. It was a highly impressive end to the game, with the pairing of TK Howden and Brayden Iose being particularly menacing. In the backs, Reece MacDonald and Kyle Brown also conrtinued their strong form, helping Manawat\u016b pull off an unlikely victory.<\/p>\n<p>Taranaki made it back-to-back wins with a 28-12 triumph over Auckland on Thursday. The Bulls simply took care of business in this game, running away with the contest in the final 20 minutes to gain a valuable five competition points, and they will be particularly satisfied with their defensive effort. They were made to make a heap of tackles in the opening half and finished the night with a rock-solid 92% tackle completion rate to limit Auckland to just two tries. It was also a decent night for the Bulls&#8217; set piece, with a few of their big men standing tall. Jesse Parete was one of them, with the gnarly lock rolling his sleeves up in his 50 minutes of action for 18 tackles and 14 carries, while JJ Pokai benefitted from a couple of lineout drives for two tries, to go with 17 tackles. Sage Walters-Hansen also had a good showing off the bench and the duo of Meihana Grindlay and Jacob Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens again looked like the most dangerous of the backs.<\/p>\n<p>Drew Wild has been inserted back into the starting tram at fullback, as George Worboys moves to the bench for Manawat\u016b, while the Bulls will be without Kini Naholo, who&#8217;s been replaced by Willem Ratu. It looks like the hosts are being wildly underrated by the market here &#8211; they may well have the better pack in this contest and they have shown that their backs are more than capable of turning it on this season. visitors completely unravelled for a 24-35 defeat. The Razorbacks came out all guns blazing in Napier, scoring four tries in the opening 30 minutes to really make a statement against the unbeaten Magpies, but it quickly came undone for Otago from there. Lucas Casey breezed in to open the scoring before Slade McDowell produced an amazing offload to send Jae Broomfield in for a 12-0 lead. By the 30-minute mark it was a 24-7 lead for Otago, but the Razorbacks hit a brick wall from there, as the hosts eventually wore them down to score three tries in the final 20 minutes to storm back in front and hand Otago a disappointing loss. The visitors were seldom able to make their way into the right parts of the field, despite having large passages of play in control, and their 79% tackle completion left a lot to be desired. Christian Lio-Willie, McDowell and Casey were great at the back of the scrum, and Kieran McClea was full of life, but there is no sugar-coating this collapse in a big game.<\/p>\n<p>Tasman were made to work hard last week against Wellington before prevailing with a 42-28 victory. As 22.5-point favourites, the expectation was that Tasman would breeze to victory against the winless Lions, but it took almost an hour for the Mako to click into gear. With the game tied at 14-14, Johnny Lee broke the deadlock and a yellow card to Wellington was then followed by a Macca Springer try to make it a 28-14 Tasman lead in the blink of an eye. A chaotic final 15 minutes follwes, with a combined four tries from the teams to end the night, but Tasman were never really under any threat in the final quarter, as they picked up a much-needed bonus-point win. Tasman&#8217;s attacking weapons looked really dangerous in this clash, with Kyren Taumoefolau, Maloni Kunawave and Eli Oudenryn all standing out. Tayne Hemopo and David Havili also had important contributions and Springer had an encouraging return.<\/p>\n<p>Jona Nareki returns for Otago on the left wing and Finn Hurley is set to make his return from injury off the bench. As for the Mako, Macca Springer starts this week on the left wing and Cooper Grant comes in at first five-eighth, but the big addition is Shannon Frizell at No.8. He&#8217;s going to help what has been an inconsistent Tasman pack, and I expect his presence to be felt on Friday. He&#8217;ll really help the Mako get some go-forward, which is important against this Otago side, and that&#8217;s going to make this a tight game.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best<\/strong><br \/>\nTasman +7.5 record. Taranaki proved to be too good in what were difficult attacking conditions in the rain, but that&#8217;s not to say that the visitors were never in the fight. A Payton Simpson try in the 55th minute made it a 12-14 ball game, but Auckland couldn&#8217;t keep their attack rolling from there. They had their chances deep in the Bulls&#8217; 22 and could have made it a very interesting finish, but instead they came up without any reward, as Kini Naholo put the nail in the coffin late on to make it another loss for Steven Bates&#8217; side. They were particularly uninspired on attack, with just three line breaks all night, and their kicking was often awry. Titi Nofoagatotoa looked to get involved often, Caleb Woodley defended well and Soane Vikena was good in open play but had some wobbly lineout throws.<\/p>\n<p>Counties Manukau made it back-to-back wins with a 47-24 triumph against Southland last Sunday. It was a slow start from the Steelers, who took almost 30 minutes to get their first points on the board, but they immediately came to life from there, with Veikoso Poloniati, Adam Morrison and Ian West-Stevens all scoring in a seven-minute window to give Counties a 19-5 lead at the break. The Stags fired back to start the second half but it was again Poloniati who kicked the Steelers back into gear, powering over for his second try to then see the hosts run in three more tries to cruise to victory in Pukekohe. It was a thrilling attacking display from Counties, regularly cracking Southland&#8217;s defence by making 10 line breaks, and although their scrum came under a lot of pressure, the attacking power of Gibson Popoali&#8217;i, Alamanda Motuga and Melani Matavao helped guide the way to a big win.<\/p>\n<p>This Battle of the Bombays shapes up to be a particularly interesting one, with Counties hitting their stride and Auckland having never really found their feet this season. It&#8217;s a relatively steady Auckland 23, with Che Clark and Harvey Cordukes the new facrs in the starting team, while Josh Gray, Ioane Moananu and Ezekiel Lindenmuth headline the Steelers&#8217; new faces. That sets us up for a tight contest in the City of Sails, and I am happy to take Counties as underdogs of more than a converted try here. key players last week, as they fell to North Harbour 57-42. It snapped the Taniwha&#8217;s three-game win streak and bumped them out of the top two in the standings, and they never looked like winning in this game. Harbour scored inside the opening five minutes and while James Ramm found a response in his first start for the Taniwha, it was a whopping 14-47 deficit by halftime. Of course, Northland had no chance of getting back into the fight from that point on, despite finding their groove later on in the game when the likes of Rivez Reihana, Sam Nock and Lachie Hooper were brought in off the bench. They&#8217;ll be happy with how Terrell Peita played in his return from injury, looking like at his ball-carrying best while also completing 19 tackles, but Northland&#8217;s lineout woes and sloppy defence ensured this game was never all that close.<\/p>\n<p>Waikato have now lost three of their last four games, with their latest defeat coming against Canterbury on Saturday. At home against the defending champions, the Mooloos would have been quietly confident, and the market had this game essentially as a pick &#8217;em, but as the game went on, it was clear that Waikato weren&#8217;t up to the challenge, with a few late illness\/injury-enforced changes also not helping their case. The two sides went back-and-forth for the opening 30 minutes, with the Mooloos&#8217; highlight coming when Rui Farrant broke free in his own half and linked up with Manaaki Boyle-Tiatia to score, but the Mooloos headed into the break down 7-12. Although Waikato were able to keep within arm&#8217;s reach of Canterbury for much of the second half, their attack never really clicked and that resulted in them failing to record the breakthrough, gaining just four entries into Canterbury&#8217;s 22. That was a byproduct of them having just 40% possession in the game, as Cantebury heaped on the pressure which eventually broke the hosts. Austin Anderson&#8217;s hot seaon continued with a try, two line breaks and six defenders beaten, while Oli Mathis also carried well. Samipeni Finau was a rock defensively, as was Senita Lauaki, but Waikato simply needed more bite on attack.<\/p>\n<p>The Taniwha have unsurprisingly called back their big guns for this Ranfurly Shield defence, with Reihana, Nock, Hooper and Rob Rush among those back in the starting team. Waikato will also get back the services of Tepaea Cook Savage and Taha Kemara for this big clash, and I expect it to be a real grind. We saw that when Tasman came to Whang\u00e3rei a couple of weeks ago and Waikato have slowed things down as their season has gone on, with three of their last four games hitting the under. It was a tidy enough performance from the defending champions, and they will be particularly happy with how they defended after leaking a couple of big totals in their last two outings. The visitors allowed just five line breaks and, more importantly, controlled 60% possession and 63% territory to wear down the Mooloos and pick up a bonus-point win. A 17-point flurry in the final 15 minutes is what got Canterbury home in this one, with Andrew Knewstubb scoring 12 of those points, headlined by his late try to really put the nail in the coffin. Despite there being some messy passages of play from the visitors, they were able to confidently hold off any Waikato attacks and force a lot of turnovers and penalties to always feel in control. No. 8 Finn McLeod really impressed, with two tries, 17 carries and five defenders beaten, while out wide Ngane Punivai again put together a threatening performance, making metres whenever carrying.<\/p>\n<p>Wellington suffered yet another loss in Round 6, this time falling to Tasman 28-42. It was a much better effort from the Lions following a grim loss to Counties Manukau at home the week prior, but their usual defensive issues crept into their game again, finishing the night with six conceded tries to make it another game of conceding 40+ points, and making their average points conceded per game this season 47.0. It was a promising start to the game from Wellington, with Divad Palu making a couple of nice runs to score, before Dominic Ropeti gave Wellington a 14-7 lead before the half-hour mark. A terrible start to the second half put the Lions on the back foot though, and they couldn&#8217;t get back into the game from there, coming up fruitless at the end of the 80 minutes. It was another inspired showing from Du&#8217;Plessis Kirifi, with a try, five beaten defenders and 16 tackles, while Ropeti, Palu and Callum Harkin all had their moments with ball in hand. However, a scrappy set piece and terrible defence again in their own 22 made Wellington pay the price.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s been a lot of rotation among this Canterbury team, with six new faces in the starting team and five new players on the bench, led by Torian Barnes and George Bell. James White comes in to start at first five-eighth, while Corey Kellow comes back into the starting team. Wellington have brought in livewire Stanley Solomon at fullback, while Logan Henry starts at halfback in an otherwise settled starting team. That will help bring a bit more life to the Lions&#8217; attack but their defence is going to again be helpless against a good Canterbury team, and the over again looks like the play here. It wasn&#8217;t a complete showing from the Magpies, as they conceded four of the game&#8217;s first five tries to fall into a 7-24 hole. The ball was consistently bouncing the visitors&#8217; way in the opening 30 minutes, with Hawke&#8217;s Bay uncharacteristically struggling with Otago&#8217;s pace of play. However, the Magpies&#8217; pack got to work in the second half, contributing with important defensive plays while making good metres, allowing the likes of Folau Fakatava and Bailyn Sullivan to take advantage. Cooper Flanders was elite up front, with a try, 12 carries, 17 tackles and two turnovers and Harry Godfrey often benefitted from Fakatava&#8217;s good runs, while the big boot of Zarn Sullivan proved to be important.<\/p>\n<p>North Harbour pulled off an excellent 57-42 win over Northland last Sunday to catapult themselves into second place in the NPC standings. It&#8217;s been a stellar opening six rounds from the men from the North Shore and they continued their red-hot attacking play last week, taking advantage of an undermanned Taniwha team to run riot, especially in the first half. Leka Tu&#8217;ungafasi crossed the chalk early on for Harbour and while Northland found a response, the hosts were merciless in their reaction, as they scored another six tries before halftime to head into the sheds with a shocking 47-14 lead. As we have often seen from them this season, NH showed a willingness to attack and carry from almost anywhere on the park, and that unlocked the likes of Rory Taylor, Kade Banks and Jed Melvin to wreak havoc on the Taniwha defence. Harbour let their feet off the gas in the second 40, with the result all but locked in, but that shouldn&#8217;t take away from what was another riveting display. Melvin was excellent all-round, rarely missing a beat on attack or defence, and Rory Taylor was excellent in space and was rewarded with a try. Tristyn Cook, Tom Barham and Cameron Howell also deserve praise for their part in the big win.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s another strong Magpies lineup, with Jacob Devery returning from injury to start at hooker, while Harbour will welcome back the electric Israel Leota. That sets us up for an attacking blockbuster in Napier, and as an afternoon game, we&#8217;re going to see the points poured on. The 24-47 defeat to Counties Manukau has the Stags second-last in the standings and it&#8217;s a long road back to the top eight from here, especially given their recent form. There were plenty of promising passages from Southland last Sunday, as they frequently enjoyed visits into the Steelers&#8217; half, but their attacking execution left a lot to be desired and their defence was even worst. The visitors finished the game with 45 missed tackles for a 78% completion rate, resulting in 10 conceded line breaks and seven conceded tries to miss out on a bonus point in Pukekohe. Their scrum was a positive, especially in the early goings, while the ever-reliable Sean Withy proved his worth again with 19 tackles and a try, and Scott Gregory had a similarly-solid display with 12 carries and 14 tackles.<\/p>\n<p>Bay of Plenty will want to quickly forget their performance from last week, as they crashed to a 12-29 defeat to Manawat\u016b at home. It was undoubtedly the Steamers&#8217; worst showing of the year, as they came up short on attck after attack, often coming up without reward from their 12 visits into the Turbos&#8217; 22. Their poor discipline and ball security was their biggest issue, as they failed to make the most of their 58% territory in a game that they will want to move on from very quickly. Nikora Broughton toiled away, as he always does, with a bunch of impressive carries, as well as being a safe defensive and lineout option. Veveni Lasaqa also had his moments but was responsible for a couple of costly turnovers, while Joe Johnston and Seuseu Naitoa Ah Kuoi worked hard defensively.<\/p>\n<p>Both teams will be desperate to bounce back and record a win here and Southland will be hoping that the return of Glen Vaihu helps them do so. Mika Muliaina also comes back into the starting team at first five-eighth, while for the Steamers, Cole Forbes, Richard Judd and Joe Webber come into the starting side. It will be an interesting game and I expect the Stags to at least be competitive in this clash, but the Steamers will have too much firepower.
