Round 4 opens with a barnburner when an under pressure Manly host a surprisingly disjointed Sydney Roosters at Brookvale with Daly Cherry-Evans turning out against his former club for the first time. While Cherry-Evans will likely receive a warm welcome at Brookvale given the state of the Sea Eagles, Manly should be well and truly up for this one. This is a nice spot for the Sea Eagles too with home underdogs of a try or more in the opening month covering at 69%. Bottom five road teams in the opening six weeks cover at just 35%. Anthony Seibold is a below average coach but this is a spot he gets the best out of his team, covering at 63% as a home underdog. Manly have covered 13 of 18 off conceding 30-plus and have covered seven of 11 as an underdog at Brookvale. With the Roosters covering just 10 of 27 as a road favourite, Manly look an appetising play to both cover and win this. Lehi Hopoate faces the worst defensive winger in the NRL in Mark Nawaqanitawase, whose opposite has scored six tries this year. Tolutau Koula has 18 tries in his last 24 games. James Tedesco has 12 tries in 21 games against Manly.<\/p>\n

A nation is declaring 2026 as our year with the New Zealand Warriors starting a season 3-0 for the first time while being the first team since the 2006 Knights to score 120 points in their first three games. The Warriors are absolutely flying and a week after Mitch Barnett returned, Luke Metcalf is back along with Charnze Nicoll-Klokstaad. They have dominated the Tigers with nine straight wins. The double digit line though is the concern with the Warriors failing to cover any of their nine double digit favourite starts the last four seasons. The best play is the under with a few strong under angles at play in this one to go with the forecast of very heavy rain. The under hits at 77.3% in Round 4 when a team off a win plays a team off a loss while the under hits at 60% in Rounds 1-4 when a team is off a win of 13-plus. With the under 32-22 when the Tigers are off a loss and Jarome Luai ruled out for the Tigers, the total is far too big. Jackson Ford is playing big minutes and has scored in his last two games. Leka Halasima has crossed 14 times in his last 17 games.<\/p>\n

The Brisbane Derby has become one of the most anticipated grudge matches on the schedule and this edition lacks absolutely nothing. Brisbane come into this off a much-needed win in the Grand Final rematch but with drama engulfing the club off the field with questions being asked as to Adam Reynolds\u2019 injury management, assistant Ben Te\u2019o walking out on the club and Payne Haas now sidelined with injury. The Dolphins have some troops returning and ride in off wins against the Titans and Sharks, the latter on the road. The Broncos have won five of the six clashes but the Dolphins have overachieved in covering four of those. Michael Maguire teams cover just 42% when favoured by 3.5 or more while Brisbane cover at just 46% at Suncorp. The Dolphins are better at night with a 26-18 cover record under lights. With Tom Flegler back, this is a Phins side that has the toughness to dominate the Broncos, making them tremendous value as an underdog. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow has scored 55 tries in 60 games since shifting to the Dolphins. Selwyn Cobbo has 44 tries in 60 games when starting on the wing. Reece Walsh has 30 tries in his last 38 games.<\/p>\n

No two teams have played lower-scoring matches for a longer period of time than the Bulldogs and Knights. Since 2008, the under has hit in 22 of the 29 matches with an average combined score of 34 points. There is certainly no reason to think that will change this week given Canterbury\u2019s attacking struggles and defensive prowess and the absence of key Knights playmakers. The Bulldogs have managed scores of just 15 and 14 this year but have won both games after conceding just 14 and 10. Canterbury have an extremely disjointed attack but perhaps the second best defence in the NRL. Newcastle started the season with a bang but have Kalyn Ponga and Dylan Brown sidelined while Fletcher Sharpe is no moral to play. The Knights seem highly unlikely to score against the Dogs and the Bulldogs aren\u2019t going to run in 36-plus. With the under 17-5 when the Bulldogs are off conceding 14 or fewer and 23-17 when the Knights are on the road, the under looks an extremely good bet. Jacob Preston is the most likely Bulldog to score with 14 tries in his last 24 games. Sitili Tupouniua is an underrated tryscoring option with four tries in his last 10 starts.<\/p>\n

Penrith\u2019s defence has been nothing short of extraordinary to start the season, conceding just two tries all year in three straight wins of 20-plus points. The Panthers are playing in a league of their own and it is hard to see the Eels being able to break down this elite Penrith defence. For the first time this year Penrith are favoured by double digits so the best way to play this match is to take the under. In the last 24 meetings between these two rivals, 22 have failed to go past 46 points. The total in this one is 47.5. Totals have been pushed too high as well with the under either 7-1 or 8-0 last week pending on the line taken in the Knights-Warriors clash. The under hits at an extraordinary 73% when a team is off a win in Round 4. The under is 10-3 when Penrith are off scoring 40-plus and 21-10 when they are off a win of 13-plus while the under is 20-10 when the Eels play at CommBank and 6-1 when they are an underdog of eight or more at the ground. The total here is way too big. Nathan Cleary is an underrated tryscorer with 67 tries in 195 games. Tom Jenkins is in elite form with eight tries so far through three weeks. Brian To\u2019o has seven tries in his last seven games against Parramatta.<\/p>\n

Melbourne have won 14 of the last 17 clashes against North Queensland but this has been far from a one-goer and given the start the Cowboys are getting at home, they can be bet with confidence. The Cowboys have covered eight of the last 10 against the Storm and won three of the last four meetings at Queensland Country Bank Stadium. Home underdogs of 12 or more points have covered at 71% the last four years while home underdogs of eight or more in the opening four rounds cover at 82%. Interstate favourites in the opening four rounds cover at 34%. The Storm were very poor against the Broncos and have covered just three of 10 as an interstate double digit favourite while they are 3-8 against the spread when favoured at night by 12.5 or more. The Cowboys can absolutely win this with the big start an outstanding play. Jaxon Purdue has 16 tries in 21 games as a starting centre. Braidon Burns has 13 tries in 20 games for North Queensland. Sua Fa\u2019alogo is in elite tryscoring form with six tries in three games.<\/p>\n

The Raiders and the Sharks would both be terribly disappointed with how their seasons have started, particularly after opening the year with a win. This shapes as a critical game for both clubs. The Raiders are nudging favouritism but with Josh Papalii suspended, they look to be under the odds. The Sharks have won and covered four of the last five meetings with two wins in the last three at Canberra Stadium. The Sharks tend to bounce back off a loss, covering 20 of 33 off defeat. The Raiders have not covered any of their last three at home and have covered just five of 17 at home when north of $1.70. Cronulla should prove too strong. Braydon Trindall is a fabulous tryscorer with eight tries in 16 games, all at big prices. Sam Stonestreet has 17 tries in 19 NRL games. KL Iro comes off a super tryscoring season where he crossed 12 times in 14 games last year.<\/p>\n

The future is now for both the Titans and the Dragons with the two winless teams wrapping up Round 4 with the loser likely to leave the week as the clear wooden spoon favourite for the season. Gold Coast have opened up small favourites but it would not surprise if St George Illawarra jumped the popular elect. The Dragons have won five of the last six against the Titans, covering five of those. This is a tremendous spot for Shane Flanagan\u2019s men, who bounce back well. The Dragons are 31-19 against the spread off a loss with a 20-9 cover record off a double digit loss. They have covered 19 of 29 off conceding 30-plus. With the Titans covering just three of 14 when favoured, the Dragons are one of the better bets in Round 4. Jaydn Su\u2019A has 14 tries in his last 43 games and is well over the odds. Kyle Flanagan has scored in his last two against the Titans.<\/p>\n
