Cleveland squeezed past the lowly Brooklyn on Monday, in a 106-102 win. James Harden returned in this game, while Donovan Mitchell (groin) remained out, and The Beard\u2019s return to play was a strong one with 22 points, nine rebounds and eight assists to help Cleveland to the win. Evan Mobley was also important, with 17 points, including nine in the fourth quarter, 13 rebounds and one block to finish a +24, while Jarrett Allen had 20 points to make for a strong night for Cleveland\u2019s twin towers. It was another shaky offensive game without Mitchell to lean on, with just a 111.6 offensive rating, with Harden\u2019s five turnovers contributing to the team\u2019s 17.9% turnover percentage, but their defence stood tall to help them get the win on the road.<\/p>\n

Detroit put together a masterful second half to turn a seven-point halftime deficit into a 106-92 win over Orlando. Detroit held the hosts to just 35 second half points to record another elite defensive performance with a 91.1 defensive rating, as they forced Orlando into 19 turnovers, including nine from Paolo Banchero. At the rim, Detroit only allowed a 54.2% FG% from the hosts, as the likes of Jalen Duren and Ausar Thompson had excellent defensive nights. Duren finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and one block and Thompson had nine points, 11 rebounds, two steals and three blocks to lead Detroit\u2019s defence, while Cade Cunningham had another elite offensive night. The MVP candidate had 29 points, six rebounds and 11 assists, while Tobias Harris had 23 points and seven rebounds.<\/p>\n

Mitchell is still out for Cleveland and that makes a win on Wednesday unlikely. The team have just a 112.8 offensive rating and a -2.4 net rating without him on the floor this season and against a fully-healthy Detroit side, Cleveland are going to find life hard without their best scorer and a key ball handler.<\/p>\n

Toronto were awful in the first quarter of their matchup against Washington but eventually steadied the ship for a 134-125 win. Toronto\u2019s 20-33 first quarter deficit was erased in the third quarter, as the visitors went on a 15-5 run of their own to take a 94-87 lead and there was no looking back from there. Immanuel Quickley led the way with 27 points and 11 assists, while Brandon Ingram had another lights out shooting night with 24 points, five rebounds and five assists on 9\/14 shooting. Jakob Poeltl had his best game since returning from injury, with 18 points on 7\/7 shooting, with 10 rebounds, three steals and one block. Scottie Barnes added 18 points and RJ Barrett had 21 as all of Toronto\u2019s stars combined for a good night out.<\/p>\n

New York put together a great performance in a 114-89 victory over San Antonio on Monday. After a sluggish start at Madison Square Garden, which saw the hosts fall behind 7-19 in the opening eight minutes of play, NY struck back almost immediately to take a 22-21 lead at quarter-time, and that seemed to give them the momentum to control the rest of the game. It was New York\u2019s third-best defensive game of the season, with a 92.4 defensive rating, and it was an elite two-way performance from Mikal Bridges that helped get them there. The rangy forward finished with 25 points, five rebounds and five steals to be a +21, while OG Anunoby also defended well with one steal and one block to go with 12 points and five boards. Jalen Brunson had 24 points and seven assists and Josh Hart got close to a triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in a statement win for Mike Brown\u2019s men.<\/p>\n

Toronto pose an interesting challenge to New York in that they have a lot of perimeter players who are capable of taking on a rather shallow pool of NY\u2019s perimeter defenders. Tie that in with this game being held in Toronto, and I have the hosts as a real chance of coming out with a win. NY are just 12-18 ATS on the road this season and Toronto are 15-9 ATS as underdogs.<\/p>\n

Philadelphia\u2019s three-game win streak came to an end on Monday in a 98-114 loss to Boston. Without Joel Embiid, the visitors never looked likely other than early in the piece when they got out to a 10-point lead, but that advantage was soon evaporated by Boston, who controlled the final three quarters of play. Philadelphia really struggled to score against the likes of Neemias Queta and Derrick White, recording just a 110.1 offensive rating on the night, as Tyrese Maxey failed to fire. The lively guard did have 33 points but it came on 45% TS%, going 12\/34 from the field in a tough shooting night, to go with six assists and two blocks. VJ Edgecombe was also off the mark with his shot, going 8\/21 for 23 points, while Kelly Oubre Jr really dragged the team\u2019s average down with a 2\/10 shooting night.<\/p>\n

San Antonio could not score against New York\u2019s defence in their Monday showdown, losing 89-114. It was as bad as Mitch Johnson\u2019s men have looked all season, with their worst offensive rating of the year at 92.4, and their defence wasn\u2019t all that flash either in the blowout loss. Victor Wembanyama was SA\u2019s best with 25 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks and Devin Vassell tried to keep his team in the fight with 18 points and seven rebounds. A woeful 9\/34 shooting night from downtown did San Antonio no favours, though, and neither did their 22 turnovers, which Wemby committed seven of, to see the hosts run away with the game.<\/p>\n

With Embiid still out, Philadelphia are in for a real challenge on Wednesday. Wembanyama is going to run riot in this matchup, but I am more worried for Maxey and Edgecombe against the testing perimeter defence of SA. They will be pressured into plenty of errors and tough shots and that will result in a lopsided contest.<\/p>\n
