Another week, another opportunity for the UFC to turn the lights on in the UFC Apex and treat the denizens of Sin City to another exciting night of drama. After several fights fell through, UFC Fight Night 264 is left with a compact 12-fight sheet topped by contrasting specialists in Gabriel Bonfim and Randy Brown.<\/p>\n\n\n

5-1 in the UFC and riding a three-fight win streak, things have been looking up for Gabriel Bonfim as he navigates as stacked welterweight division. Most recently, Bonfim sneaked a hotly debated split decision win over Stephen Thompson but impressed few in the showing.<\/p>\n

Bonfim has enjoyed a wealth of success in the Octagon but it hasn\u2019t been entirely without struggle. In particular, Bonfim\u2019s consistency down the stretch has been a point of pain. Not only did it lead to his lone defeat at the hands of a tenacious Nicolas Dalby, but it nearly cost him his bout with \u201cWonderboy\u201d, too.<\/p>\n

A grappling specialist at heart, Bonfim does excellent work from the top position and has done his best to catch his wrestling up to speed. As aforementioned, his best efforts tend to come in the first half of a bout but Bonfim has proven surprisingly capable at dragging solid competition to the mat.<\/p>\n

That isn\u2019t to say Bonfim is incapable of winning fights on the feet but both his gas tank and lack of power indicate his best chances exist in tie-ups. The Brazilian has developed some sneakily explosive tools on the feet but it all serves as a route to grappling, lacking the cohesion to have an entire winning game plan built on the back of.<\/p>\n

14-6 in the UFC and approaching a decade in the organization, Randy \u201cRudeboy\u201d Brown is a name most fights have will have heard before. Entering the UFC as a fresh-faced professional with only six fights to his name, Brown has developed into one of the division\u2019s dark horses.<\/p>\n

For the most part, Brown has only been conquered by genuine contenders and over the years he has collected an impressive resume. Last year saw Brown drop a split decision to Bryan Battle but the verdict proved contentious \u2013 if given the nod, Brown would be riding a five-fight win streak into the weekend.<\/p>\n

A heavy-handed striker with sharp offensive tools at all ranges, Brown is a deceptively refined fighter with thought behind his game. He owns the power to exchange and hope for the best but generally does a great job of setting up his offense and building to a proper finish.<\/p>\n

At 6\u20193\u201d (191cm) with the limb length to match, Brown has been finding a home for long, whipping offense. This slightly more cerebral, rangier output serves to aid Brown especially well in this contest as he will be fending off takedowns early and often against Bonfim.<\/p>\n

Brown\u2019s takedown defense has mostly held up through his UFC career but it wouldn\u2019t be a surprise to see him hit his back this weekend. Bonfim is surprisingly adept at securing takedowns and even if he is unable to consolidate control on his lanky foe, the Brazilian is likely to be credited for some success.<\/p>\n

That said, this will be the first five-round contest of both men\u2019s careers. While I expect Bonfim to ground Brown at some points early on, Brown is equipped to persevere and wrench the fight back in the second half.<\/p>\n

Far superior on the feet and a heavier-hitter by a clear margin, Brown will be inflicting damage every time these two are striking. Expect the pace of the fight to wear on the Brazilian once again, with Brown roaring up from the rear view mirror and overtaking Bonfim before the final bell.<\/p>\n

Once 0-2 in the UFC and now the winner of The Ultimate Fighter 33, things have turned around in a big way for Joseph \u201cBopo\u201d Morales. The 31-year-old lost both of his initial UFC bouts in 2018 but returned to The Ultimate Fighter last year, taking out Alibi Idiris in the finals to be crowned.<\/p>\n

Morales has worked hard to round out his game with Urijah Faber-led Team Alpha Male but ultimately remains a grappling specialist with sneaky finishing ability on the mat. With three wins via triangle choke alone, Morales has proven one of the select few who will threaten with meaningful submissions even if stuck on bottom.<\/p>\n

That said, Morales\u2019 recent surge makes it clear he\u2019s improving on all fronts. His striking isn\u2019t a focus of his but it has developed to a competent point and helps keep him safe while looking for more offensive opportunities.<\/p>\n

Morales is poised to create fireworks with a returning, occasionally-retired veteran in Matt Schnell. A fighter with offense on the mind every time he steps into the cage, Schnell got back to action this year and outpointed Jimmy Flick.<\/p>\n

The win wasn\u2019t quite a vintage performance though and did more to stoke skepitsm than anything. Schnell retired from the sport last year after being submitted by Cody Durden but returned only seven months later.<\/p>\n

At this point, the version of Schnell that walks into the cage is far from the best one. 35-year-old and with 15 bouts in the UFC under his belt, Schnell\u2019s run in the organization has been all gas, no breaks. That pace has led to a multitude of highlights and exciting showdowns but the damage Schnell has accumulated is showing now.<\/p>\n

At his best, Schnell would be able to win minutes on the feet and threaten in all positions of a grappling match. But his body hasn\u2019t been reacting the way it should and he has always been something of a glass cannon to begin with. Look for the newly crowned TUF 33 winner to make the most of his second chance and close the book on a tired road warrior.<\/p>\n

2-2 in his last four, Uros Medic has continued his trend of volatility and made sure he has yet to hear scorecards. Medic has only been to the third round a single time; one way or another, Medic will drag the fight into dangerous territory and demand only one can escape.<\/p>\n

The 32-year-old can be deadly when he lands but owns mediocre defense in his own right. Breakable takedown defense only compounds the urgency for Medic to get his offense out first and close the show before the cracks widen too much.<\/p>\n

A striker by nature, the southpaw is crafty and quick. His speed is an underrated asset that clearly catches many by surprise, and he\u2019s developed a handy countering game to compliment his physical assets well.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no questioning Medic has improved in recent years but he hasn\u2019t necessarily evolved. Medic will look to exploit a speed advantage early but ultimately he cannot resist entering the fray and letting his hands fly.<\/p>\n

Chaos is where Muslim Salikhov finds comfort and he will not shy away from a war with Medic, even as a 41-year-old. Much to his chagrin, Salikhov is aging but he can take solace in knowing he has plenty left to offer.<\/p>\n

Displaying shocking longevity, Salikhov is riding a three-fight win streak and most recently nuked Carlos Leal in 42 seconds. Though not the quickest in the division, Salikhov is faster than he appears and owns tremendous timing developed with decades of experience.<\/p>\n

Hailing from an accomplished background as a Wushu Sanda competitor, Salikhov has always owned a somewhat unique skill set and timing but his devastating power and durability have made for an unassuming monster with a 9-4 record in the UFC overall.<\/p>\n

These two will make for an explosive pairing and neither man enjoys long fights. Both are capable of playing the role of counter-puncher but Medic seems the more likely of the two to tire of that pace and dial things up.<\/p>\n

Salikhov is the slower man but is accustomed to working within tight margins against physically domineering fighters. He owns the tools necessary to catch Medic clean and is accustomed to hard fights; at this point, it\u2019s hard not to back the seasoned veteran to find a way again.<\/p>\n

The older brother of event headliner Gabriel Bonfim, things haven\u2019t gone quite as smoothly for 29-year-old Ismael. Since joining the UFC two years ago, Bonfim has alternated wins and losses with his most recent being a first round stoppage loss to Nazim Sadykhov.<\/p>\n

Despite being close in age with Gabriel and largely training with the same teams, Ismael ended up largely preferring striking whereas his brother excels on the mat. Ismael\u2019s UFC debut saw him knock out Terrance McKinney with a flying knee and that is very much the level of explosiveness Bonfim prefers.<\/p>\n

In fact, Bonfim is something of a negligent offensive wrestler. He is competent on the defensive front but generally fights as someone who prefers and expects a striking contest. He may just receive one this weekend but Bonfim\u2019s lack of diversity is worth noting.<\/p>\n

On the other end of the spectrum, it can be a bit hard to pin down exactly what Chris Padilla wants to do when he\u2019s inside the cage. His most recent appearance saw him get a split decision win over Jai Herbert but the performance was less-than-thrilling.<\/p>\n

Padilla is 3-0 in the UFC with two finishes by varying means. He has shown the ability to outclass and dominate fighters but could be accused of not doing enough. When he\u2019s working, Padilla is quick, feisty, and dangerous. In particular, Padilla has a sneakily painful top game with finishing skills on the mat.<\/p>\n

Both men in this contest own a greater ceiling than they showed in their most recent outing but I cannot shake the feeling Padilla is getting ready for a breakout performance. He is more carefully refined, intelligent fighter than he\u2019s given credit for.<\/p>\n

Though Padilla may not dominate on the feet, he owns the ability to drag this fight to the mat and collect minutes of control time. Padilla has multiple ways to win this fight and threaten Bonfim, especially down the stretch. Look for the unlikely streak of Padilla to continue as he moves to 4-0 in the UFC.<\/p>\n

2-0 in the UFC with as many finishes, Marco Tulio entered the organization in January and has been collecting highlights since. He hopes to end the year with more as he takes on the biggest challenge of his young career at UFC Fight Night 264.<\/p>\n

Tulio is the betting favorite this weekend but wins over Ihor Potieria and Tresean Gore didn\u2019t prove his future contention inevitable. That said, Tulio did put a beating on Gore using just about every strike he knows and has already earned a reputation as an exciting, diverse striker.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Tulio hasn\u2019t always been such a high-flying dynamo. On regional circuits he demonstrated a quieter style built around counter-punching those he respected. On occasion, Tulio would even drag fights to the floor and do a little mauling before they end up back on their feet.<\/p>\n

The 31-year-old Brazilian has power in every limb but has the loose, confident striking characteristics of a man rarely challenged. Generally the bigger, more skilled fighter inside the cage, Tulio will this weekend be facing a man who can match his size and certainly compare with his technical ability.<\/p>\n

Since a decision loss to Gregory Rodrigues to end 2024, Christian Leroy Duncan has rebounded tremendously and notched two clean victories. Most recently, Duncan\u2019s spinning back elbow ended the night of Eryk Anders early.<\/p>\n

5-2 in the UFC overall, England\u2019s representative has not always gotten the respect he deserves. A sharp striker with particularly thudding kicks, Duncan is a more refined, technically sound fighter than he\u2019s given credit for.<\/p>\n

Recent years have seen him develop new layers to his game and mixing in offensive takedowns have been just a part of that process. Duncan\u2019s refinement is worth noting and there\u2019s no denying the experience advantage he\u2019ll carry into the cage at UFC Fight Night 264. Despite the optimistic trends, Marco Tulio stands to struggle this weekend more than he ever has.<\/p>\n

Tulio is a vigorous fighter but he comes off a bit sloppy at times \u2013 it\u2019s rarely exploited but Duncan is capable of doing so in multiple ways. Look for the English veteran to mix up his weapons, tie Tulio up, wear the younger man down, and drag this fight into deep waters.<\/p>\n
