It makes sense that the Storm are favourites to end the Panthers reign as the dominant force in the NRL this season<\/strong><\/a>. The Panthers have been a victim of their own success with Luai and Fisher-Harris the latest to depart the club following their 4th consecutive title but that does not mean they cannot make it five in a row. The core of Cleary, Edwards, Yeo, Marin and To\u2019o remain, and we cannot ignore their ability to produce new talent. The Storm are 2-3 in their last 5 NRL Grand Final<\/strong><\/a> appearances and despite being the most consistent team in the last two decades, don\u2019t necessarily have the highest ceiling.<\/p>\n

The addition of Ben Hunt fills a massive void for the Broncos, especially with Mam absent for the first half of the season but failing to convert a winning position in the 2023 Grand Final will haunt them for a very long time. The Bulldogs were the big improvers last season but are sill 2+ players short of building a championship roster while the Roosters have lost almost half their starting side so you can put a line through them. Wayne Bennett will always be the mastermind but not even he can save Latrell and the Rabbitohs.<\/p>\n

The Eels are a big wildcard following a long list of offseason moves but the two best value bets are the Sharks and Sea Eagles. Both have solidified their squads by addressing weaknesses. Fonua-Blake is a huge addition for the Sharks as his go-forward will lay the platform for the duo of Hynes and Trindall. Taking the Sea Eagles in any futures markets is risky at the best of times as we have come to accept that Tom Trbojevic will mist at least 10 games of the season, and they cannot win in September without him.<\/p>\n

The keys to winning the minor premiership are avoiding injuries to key personnel, having depth in spine positions, and effectively navigating your way through the middle third of the season – a period which is heavily disrupted by State of Origin and byes. No team is better at achieving this than the Melbourne Storm who have won the J.J Giltinan Shield in 5 of the last 9 seasons. They won 7 in a row through Rounds 14-21 last season and finished 4 points clear at the top despite being without Papenhuyzen and Munster for the bulk of the season. Sua Fa\u2019alogo and Tyran Wishart were outstanding when called upon in the absence of Grant and Papenhuyzen which is why the Storm are such a good bet in this market. Don\u2019t look for value elsewhere and simply double down on the Stom.<\/p>\n

Top 4 – Melbourne\/Penrith (Multi) ($2.32)<\/em>
\nThey were the two best teams by a significant margin las season and nothing has changed in 2025. People are making the big mistake of writing the Panthers off because of the departure of Luai and Fisher-Harris but they are forgetting that Nathan Cleary played a total of only 10 regular season games last year. If he plays 15+ games, there is no way they miss out on the top 4! For all the reason mentioned in the regular season winner preview, the Storm are the lock of all locks to finish in the top 4. After all, they have finished in the top 4 in 9 of the last 10 seasons and in the only year that they missed out, there were 5th. It is also worth noting that both teams have finished in the top four in each of the last five years!<\/p>\n

Parramatta – Top 4 ($5.50) and Top 8 ($2.40) (Back After Round 1)<\/em>
\nThe Sharks are Roosters rounded off the top 4 last year but face a tough task to repeat that effort. The Sharks have not finished in the top 4 in consecutive years since 1978\/79 while the Roosters have left themselves with far too many holes to plug. We regularly see at least one team make the top 4 after failing to play finals footy in the previous year and that is what we are looking for here. The Eels represent good value as they have plenty of upside. Moses returns from injury and have added strike out wide (Lomax and Ado-Carr). They have one of the easier schedules and that does not consider that their two games against the Panthers are during the Origin period. Keep in mind that they face the Storm in Round 1 who DO NOT lose in the opening round of the season. Wait until Round 2 to back the Eels for a top 4\/top 8 finish.<\/p>\n

Top 8 \u2013 Canberra Raiders ($4.00)<\/em>
\nPoints differential was the only thing that denied the Raiders a finals spot last year. They amassed 12 wins despite Fogarty playing a total of only 12 games and Hosking being unavailable for 20 games after being one of their best in the opening month. Horsbrough is also back on deck after playing only 5 games and they will finally be forced to playing their youthful talent with Whitehead, Rapana and Cotric now gone. Ricky Stuart is a polarising figure but one thing is for certain and that is the Raiders winning the effort battle in the bulk of their matches.<\/p>\n

Two teams that will not be getting the wooden spoon are the Raiders and Dragons. Shane Flanagan was adamant before a ball was kicked last season that his side would not be finishing last, and he was right as they almost made the top eight. They have added plenty of experience and the exit of Ben Hunt could be exactly what they needed to create more balance in their squad. The Raiders have the benefit of a favourable schedule and games in the freezing cold of the nation\u2019s capital. Notably, they have not won the wooden spoon since their inaugural season in 1982.<\/p>\n

Without Ponga the Knights would be a lock for the spoon but with him barely playing half the games they have made the finals in 4 of the last 5 seasons. The Cowboys made a deep run last season but could make the biggest drop of all teams. They lose the duo of Feldt and Holmes who combined for 39 tries last season with the latter being the NRL\u2019s top point scorer. The other side that catches the eye in this market are the Warriors. The trio of Fonua-Blake, Tohu Harris and Shaun Johnson were the heartbeat of the side two years ago when they made the preliminary finals and along with Tevaga are gone. They have three players (CNK, RTS and Tuaupiki) whose best position is fullback which will likely see plenty of chopping and changing. A slow start to the season could see the wheels fall off. Backing two teams at double digit odds \u2013 Cowboys and Warriors.<\/p>\n

The Gold Coast Titans ranked 13th in tries scored as a team but that did not stop Alofiana Khan-Pereira finishing as the top tryscorer with 24 tries in only 21 games played. He has 44 tries in 44 NRL games played and if the Titans can improve marginally as a team he will likely run away with this prize for the second year in a row. The Roosters duo of Tupou (21) and Young (20) were in the mix last year but with the Chooks set to decline, neither will go close to replicating those numbers.<\/p>\n

The following will come as a surprise to most, but Panthers\/Storm players rarely feature in the top 5 of this list at the end of the season. They are often good enough to break teams down on the inside and their big names (To\u2019o, Coates etc) will often miss game\/be rested due to State of Origin. Alex Johnston is the forgotten man in this market and the best value bet by a country mile. He has won this award four times including three in a row from 2020-22. The Rabbitohs were horrific last season but if the left edge of Latrell Mithcell and Cody Walker can start to sing again, it will be AJ who benefits. James Schiller is also worth a throw at the stumps at huge odds. He had 5 tries in 5 games for the Raiders last season but it is his move to the Knights which brings him into calculation \u2013 especially if he locks down the starting wing spot. Dominic Young finished as the NRL\u2019s top tryscorer playing right wing for the Knights two years ago and we won\u2019t have to have much on at 201-1.<\/p>\n

There is money to be made in this market. Reuben Garrick is a false favourite, and it will be very difficult for him to finish top whilst playing centre. He averaged 8.4 points per game playing in the centres last season compared to 12.4ppg when he won top point scorer in 2021. Last year\u2019s winner, Valentine Holmes, moves to the Dragons where his points will dry up significantly. Zac Lomax would have been a candidate had he been on the wing for the Eels but his wish of playing centre will only work against him. Nick Meaney has finished second in points scored in each of the last two years and is the clear top pick. He has locked down the kicking duties and had Wishart not slotted 14 goals in his absence last season, Meaney could have won the award.<\/p>\n

The Storm will be as dominant, if not more dominant, which placed Meaney in a very beneficial position. He only scored 10 tries last year so an uptake in that department is expected. The duo of Latrell Mitchell and Nathan Cleary cannot be trusted and will be hindered by injury and State of Origin. Scott Drinkwater is one a double figure odds that is worth a crack. He kicked at 77.8% when replacing Holmes with the boot last year and could play a more prominent role in attack (tries). Meaney the main bet with something small on Drinkwater.<\/p>\n

\nThe Dolphins won 11 games last year and despite Wayne Bennett returning to South Sydney, the Queensland side can continue to hold their own. They play the finalists (Panthers and Storm) only once each, have 5 of their first 7 games at home and finish the season with consecutive home games against the Titans and Raiders.<\/p>\n

Sydney Roosters \u2013 Under 11.5 Wins ($1.88)<\/em>
\nThis will be the year where we find out just how good a coach Trent Robinson is. In the last few years the Roosters have grossly underperformed and Robbo must now find a way to win games with a revamped roster. Manu, Sua\u2019ali\u2019I, Terrell May, Tupouinua and Waerea-Hargreaves have all moved on but it doesn\u2019t end there\u2026 Sam Walker and Brandon Smith will return in the tail end of the year, if at all, with both recovering from ACL injuries. There is only so much that Tedesco can do on his own.<\/p>\n
