Two-time defending champion Cori Gauff will not be back to chase a three-peat but there is no shortage of quality in this year\u2019s ASB Classic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have several Grand Slam champions including Naomi Osaka, Sloane Stephens, Emma Raducanu and Sofia Kenin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Madison Keys is the top seed and is looking to continue the USA\u2019s success in this tournament with an American winning 6 of the last 8 editions of this tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n

She has made the 4th Round or better in 5 of her last 10 Grand Slam appearances which includes two semi-finals. Keys is arguably the biggest hitter in the field and certainly the most dominant player on serve. Is also clutch when it matters having won 5 of the last 6 finals she has contested including each of the last three.<\/p>\n

Won the Australian Open in 2020 and her best results have come on hard courts.<\/p>\n

At age 23, Lulu Sun is classified as a late bloomer but is coming off a career-best season where she burst onto the scene. Won multiple ITF Tour titles in the early stages of last season but it was at Wimbledon where she quickly became a household name. She made it through to the quarter finals as a qualifier beating Qinwen Zheng and Emma Raducanu along the way. Also contested another final later in the season in Monterrey which makes her more than a local home. In fact, she can make it through to the quarter finals and beyond.<\/p>\n

Naomi Osaka<\/strong>
\nFailed to win more than three consecutive matches during the 2024 season and is currently a shadow of the player that won four majors. Couldn\u2019t get through the qualifiers at the Western & Southern Open and was ousted in the first round in the quest for gold in Paris by 36-year-old Angelique Kerber. Will be backing against her in the games handicap market for as long as she is in the draw.<\/p>\n

Emma Raducanu<\/strong>
\nIs consistently overvalued by the oddsmakers and is a perennial underperformer in the last two years. Has failed to make it past the 2nd Round in 8 of her 9 Grand Slam appearances since winning the US Open. Moreover, went down to players in the draw this week at the last two majors \u2013 namely Sofia Kenin at the US Open and Lulu Sun on home soil at Wimbledon as a heavy favourite. Her victory at the 2021 US Open remains her solo career title and she will not be adding to that list here.<\/p>\n

Sloane Stephens<\/strong>
\nIs a former champion of the ASB Classic (2016) but has been nothing short of horrendous in the last 6 months. Lost her last 6 and 13 of her last 15 matches to close out the 2024 season and it is the way she is losing which tells the story. Of her last 13 defeats, 12 of them have been in straight sets!<\/p>\n

Elise Mertens<\/strong>
\nConsistency has helped Mertens amass over US $15 million in prizemoney over her career, but she is clearly multiple levels below the best players in the world. Has not won a WTA title since 2023 and a host of lower-ranked players beat her in the tail end of last season including Lys, Bucsa and Birrell. Once she faces a seeded opponent, she will more than likely be heading for an early exit.<\/p>\n

Qualifiers<\/strong>
\nWith a host of major winners and perennial top 20 players in the field, it is hard to see any of the qualifiers making a deep run. All are ranked well outside the top 100 and there is a big margin between players ranked in the top 50 and those ranked outside the top 150. We could see one or two cause an upset early in the week, but I will be very surprised if an of them make it through to the weekend.<\/p>\n
