What are Jackpots and Bonus Weekends?

Jackpots

Jackpots occur when some of the betting pool is not struck. It could be that no-one selects the correct combination, or that only a percentage of it is struck. The way that the jackpot is treated is different for certain bet types:

Trifecta and First4
Each day Jackpots can occur for Trifecta and First4. These go to the next available race at the same meeting and are shown up in the top table on this page. If a Jackpot occurs on the last race of a meeting, then any unstruck funds go forward to the next months Bonus Weekend.

Quaddie
As there is only ever one Quaddie per meeting, if the betting pool is not completely struck for this, then any unstruck funds go forward to next months Bonus Weekend.

Pick6
Any unstruck Pick6 funds go forward to the Pick6 on the same day next week. For example, if the Friday night Harness Pick6 was not struck, it would go to next Friday's Harness Pick6 (and not to Saturday). Details of Pick6 jackpots and guaranteed amounts are displayed in the second table on this page.

Bonus Weekends

New Zealand Bonus Weekend generally falls on the second weekend of every month, However there are some exceptions to the rule.  For example, August Bonus money was spread across the entire month.

Bonus money comes from the unstruck pools from the previous month for each code. For example there was $75,000 worth of unstruck dividends from domestic Harness in January which were used to fund domestic Harness Quaddie and First4 Bonus pools in February.

The Bonus money listed is just the starting pool size for Quaddie and First4, so the pools will grow even bigger! For example, the Quaddie at Te Rapa in February paid $1907.20 for a $1 unit. Without $100,000 Bonus money that was injected, it would have only paid $1356.10.

As a guide, the June 2011 Bonus Weekend allocations were:

Harness Bonuses: $40,000

$20,000 to the Quaddie at Alexandra Park on Friday 10 June (Last 4 Races)

$20,000 to the Quaddie at Nelson on Sunday 12 June (Races 4 to 7)

Gallops Bonuses: $70,000

$25,000 to the Quaddie at Te Rapa on Saturday 11 June
