Jockey/Driver Challenge: Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if there is a deadheat in a race?

Jockey Challenge points are shared between the two jockeys that were involved in the deadheat. For example if two jockeys are involved in a deadheat for first the points are allocated as follows: First placed jockeys get 2.5 points each [3 (1st points) + 2 (2nd points) /2 (number of jockeys) = 2.5] and the third placed jockey gets 1 point.

What happens if there are multiple jockeys declared as winners of the Jockey Challenge?

Subject to Rule 12.13, in the event of a dead heat between jockeys, the amount to be paid to successful bets in respect of such jockeys shall be the Return divided by the number of jockeys included in such a dead heat.

What if the Jockey/Driver I have bet on is injured in the first race?

Subject to Rule 12.15 there will be no Refunds of bets should a Jockey/Driver be replaced by another Jockey/Driver.

Do I get points if my Jockey/Driver places 2nd or 3rd?

Yes- two points for a second placed ride / drive and one point for a third placed ride / drive.

What if my jockey comes last?

This bet type is based on cumulative points. Your Jockey/Driver only builds points from races at the meeting where they place 1st, 2nd or 3rd in. There are not points for last. There is no option for taking the last placed Jockey/Driver.

Can I take several Jockeys/Drivers in one Multi bet?

No. You can only take one Jockey/Driver from the same option in one Multi bet, as this would be a related outcome. You can only take a Multi bet across separate meetings/options. However, you can take as many individual bets on this option as you choose.

What is the minimum bet value and can I take an Easybet?

The minimum bet for this option is $5 as this is a Fixed Odds product. Easybets are not available on Jockey/Driver Challenges as this is a Fixed Odds option.

Where can I take this bet?

Jockey/Driver Challenge betting is available through any of our TAB betting channels; here on tab.co.nz as well as TAB Mobile, TAB stores, on-course, Phonebet and Touch Tone.

Does this challenge cover all races the Jockey/Driver is in?

The challenge only covers the races within the nominated meeting or carnival for that option. Also note that not all Jockeys/Drivers will have rides in one meeting as some races have smaller fields.

What happens if the meeting is abandoned?

If the meeting is abandoned, all bets are refunded except when more than half of the originally programmed scheduled Races of the Meeting are run at which time the leading Jockey/Jockey will be determined the winner.

Does my Jockey/Driver have to be in every race?

No as not all Jockeys/Drivers will have rides in one meeting - some races have smaller fields and therefore will have less Jockeys/Drivers.

What if my Jockey/Driver has their placing changed due to a protest?

Points are based on the official race results.

Do I get a return if my Jockey/Driver comes 2nd or 3rd?

You will get a return if your Jockey/Driver wins the most races (comes first), or places more often than any other Jockey/Driver, as results are based on who wins the most cumulative points. Your Jockey/Driver only builds points from races at the meeting where they place 1st, 2nd or 3rd. For example if in a 10 race meeting Jockey A comes first in three races (9 points) but does not place in any other races, but Jockey B comes 2nd six times (12 points) then Jockey B would beat Jockey A.

Can I put a bet on after Race 3?

No - the book will remain closed from the start of Race 3.

Is this option available every day?

No. A Jockey Challenge will be opened on one selected domestic meeting and the feature Australian meeting every Wednesday and Saturday. There will also be a Jockey Challenge, under a trial basis, each Friday. Starting from Friday 4 August 2011, under a trial basis, a Driver Challenge will be open on one Harness meeting every Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday. This schedule may change in the future.

Want to do some more homework, but not sure where to look?

To view a list of all of the rides a Jockey has at a particular meeting, you have two options:
[1]  Click on a Jockey’s name on the Racing page: A pop up screen will show the particular jockey’s declared rides at the time.
[2]  Racing Form: Head to the Racing Form link on the horizontal green bar on the Racing page. A day or so prior to the meeting, a link for Jockeys will appear to the right of the form guide options. Click on this link to get a full list of all Jockeys at that particular meeting.

Points to note

The New Zealand Racing Board reserves the right to close a book and refund bets if a favoured Jockey/Driver does not turn up to a race meeting, or if two named Jockeys/Drivers do not make the meeting. In both cases a new book may be re-opened. If the meeting is abandoned, all bets are refunded except when more than half of the originally programmed scheduled races of the Meeting are run at which time the leading Jockey/Driver will be determined the winner.

The Jockey/Driver Challenge Rules have been added into the New Zealand Betting Rules. Please refer to Rules 12.1 and 12.13 (as at September 2011).
