No TV Races

Now you can now bet on more races than ever!

The TAB now offers betting on non-televised races, giving you more options to bet on. This is similar to how we offer betting on some non-televised Sports options. We’ve named this No TV which will feature alongside all races that are not televised. The most recent update to this page relates to Teletext. Read on for more details.

We’ve pulled together some information below to help you understand No TV betting.

  • Where are the No TV races from?
No TV races will only be off-shore events. Initially these races are limited, but we intend to extend this to include as many overseas races in the future. We’ll continue to televise all NZ domestic races for Thoroughbred, Harness and Greyhound racing.
  • Why has the TAB done this?
Customer demand and we’ve listened. Up until now, we’ve only been able to offer betting on some off-shore races, which has limited customers from taking a bet type such as a Quaddie on those off-shore meetings. This opportunity not only expands your betting options, it also allows you to take a Quaddie, whether the races are televised or not.
  • How can I bet on a No TV race?
You can bet on a No TV race through any of our TAB betting channels; here on tab.co.nz as well as m.tab.co.nz, TAB retail stores, on-course, Phonebet, Touch Tone and SKYbet.
  • How do I know if a race is televised or not?
No TV wording will be added to the Race Title of all non-televised races. This will then appear on bet tickets and on the retail store lists. On tab.co.nz a small icon will appear in various areas of our website to identify when a race will not be televised, as per the examples shown below. Trackside (SKY Channel 36) and TAB TV (SKY Channel 35) will update customers on upcoming No TV races.

  • I asked to bet on the ‘next race to go’ and my bet was different to what I saw on TV.
The next race to go’ may be a televised race or not. In a TAB retail store, a lot of our customers are accustomed to asking to have a bet on ‘the next race to go’. To ensure you get that bet that you wanted, it’s best that you fill in a Betting Slip. As always, please check your tickets to ensure you’ve placed your bet correctly. Our TAB Operators will help you to become familiar with this new structure.
  • What changes will I see on Teletext?

We have made some changes to our teletext system to make betting on NoTV races simpler. From 13 April 2011, Teletext has been modified so that "No TV" races do NOT appear in the Teletext "Next Races" menu. This affects the following pages:

Page 606: now Next TV Race
Page 608: now Next TV Race +1
Page 696: now Next TV Race +2
Page 607: now Next TV Race (expanded)
Page 604: now Quinella for Next TV Race

This means that NoTV races will not appear on any of the above teletext screens and that these pages will only provide information on races that you can see on television. It is important to remember that the 'Next Race To Go' may still be a NoTV race, so it is always better to state the Race Meeting and Race Number when placing a bet.

Access to Odds for "No TV" Events

While we have taken NoTV races out of the Next Race To Go teletext cycle, we have made some other enhancements that make it easier to differentiate between a televised and NoTV race. The odds for "No TV" races can still be accessed via the individual meeting Next race (pages 631 to 649) and All races (pages 651 to 669) pages.  Where it applies, these pages now have "**No TV**" flashing in the bottom right hand corner.

  • I always use Phonebet which means I have to place my bets verbally.
When using Phonebet, our operators will repeat your bet back to you to ensure we’re processing it correctly. Please ask for clarification if you’re still unsure if your bet is correct or not, prior to your bet being processed.
  • In one listing, can I see all the races that are not televised?
The Racing Schedule available on tab.co.nz will allow you to do this. Go to the Racing section and click on Schedules which is a link on the top horizontal bar. This shows all races and those races that are not televised will have a No TV icon beside them. If you would like to sort the races in order of whether they’re televised or not, select the View all races in time order option which can be found under the date in the top left hand corner of the Schedules page. Then click on the No TV icon in the header and this will group together all races that are not televised.

  • Can Race Tracker help me with this opportunity?
It sure can. Race Tracker will allow you to follow horses, trainers, breeders etc who are racing off-shore, in races that we can now offer betting on but may not be able to televise. Race Tracker is available to TAB Account customers. For TAB Account customers, go to My TAB and update your profile in My Race Tracker. If you don’t have a TAB Account, click here. to open an account now.
  • Will the Pool sizes be small?
Not necessarily. All of the No TV races will be Commingled, so while not televised in NZ, they will be televised live in the country of origin. This will ensure that the Pools are of an adequate size.
  • Is a No TV race actually a real race?
Yes it is. The TAB is a brand of the NZ Racing Board. Under the Racing Act 2003 we can only offer betting on official horse races. This is enforced by the NZ Department of Internal Affairs. Unlike some off-shore betting agencies, we do not offer betting on simulated races. For more information about this, see the Terms and Conditions section on our homepage.
  • If a race I have bet on is not televised how will I find out the result?
The results will be available generally in the same way as they are now. The only difference will be that the result will not be broadcast via TV or the radio. You can find a full listing of the Results, including all No TV races, on tab.co.nz in a link provided on the homepage or in the Racing section. There is also a Results feature that sits at the bottom of the Racing section, allowing you to toggle between the last 5 results or the latest results. TAB Account customers also have the option on how they display the results on this feature by setting up their racing Preferences in My TAB.

If you have made your bet in one of our Retail stores or on-course your ticket can be checked by an operator or you can ask the operator to print out any results. Additionally, our retail stores will continue to publish the results and these will also include the No TV races.

Other ways to check results are via Teletext (the results refer only to the current days racing) and by referring to the Newspapers liftouts (the next day).

If you have made a bet via Phonebet, then you are welcome to call back Phonebet for the result.
  • Does the money that is bet on off-shore events go back to the NZ Racing industry?
Yes. As with all other races we take bets on, the profits from betting on No TV events will be returned to the NZ Racing Industry,
