Apprentice Allowance
All thoroughbred horses have to carry an allotted weight when they race. In most cases this weight can be reduced if an apprentice jockey is used. The amount of this weight reduction is called the apprentice allowance. This allowance starts at 4kg and decreases as the apprentice jockey wins more races
The current apprentice allowances in New Zealand are:
0 - 5 wins 4kg
6 - 30 wins 3kg
31 - 60 wins 2kg
61 - 100 wins 1kg
